D4A Patreon: 🤍 It's time for an ICONIC ENGINES episode on Toyota's rev-happy 2ZZ-GE engine. The 2zz engine started it's life in 1999, building on the base created by the 1zz-fe engine just two years before. But the engines share very little with each other. The 2zz engine is the performance variant of Toyota's zz engine series, which was made as a replacement for Toyota's very popular and successful A series of engines. The A series spawned the legendary 4age engine among others, and the 2zz can be seen as the spiritual successor to the 4age. But if we compare the 2zz-ge engine to Toyota's older performance four cylinders (2tg, 18rg, 3sge, 4age), we will see that the 2zzge is different from all of them in that it has an all aluminum engine block, compared to cast iron blocks found in the older engines. Cast iron blocks are great and almost never go wrong, and Toyota as a car manufacturer usually prefers simple, beefy, high-mileage resistant engineering solutions that are very unlikely to develop faults. Cast iron blocks are one such piece of engineering and this explain why Toyota was slower to abandon them in its four cylinders compared to many other manufacturers. But times were changing, and Toyota had to make a more modern, lighter engine, and so the zz series of engines got an all aluminum engine block. The 2zz came during an interesting time for Toyota, but one that can be described as somewhat sad for car enthusiasts. The mr2 mk2 (sw20) had turned from a turbo powered monster into a, perhaps better handling, but much tamer naturally aspirated car that was the mr2 spyder (zzw30), the legendary supra was also almost finished with it's production. The Prius hit the market in 1997 and over the next decade on so Toyota would be focused on developing the hybrid system and making it's cars cleaner and more fuel efficient. But Toyota wasn't ready to give up the sports car just yet and the 2zz engine really reflects the spirit of the times. It was fuel efficient and clean but also really sporty, fun and rev-happy. So what about the specs? When looking at the specs of the 2zz engine it's very useful to look at it side by side with the 1zz engine. The differences between the 2zz and the 1zz reveal why the 2zz performs better, makes more power and revs higher. Although, upon first glance, the engines look very similar they are in fact very different, down to their bore and stroke. The 2zz has more bore and less stroke. This means it's better at revving higher, and also has more space for bigger valves so it breathes better and makes more power. This also means key parts between the 2zz and the 1zz are not interchangeable. You definitely can't take a 2zz head and put it on a 1zz block. The differences continue in the rest of the engine. The 2zz has very light internals, forged connecting rods and light cast pistons with a special low-friction coating. The variable valve timing between the 2zz and the 1zz is also different. The 1zz engine gets a more modest version that, in essence, only affects cam phasing. The 2zzge vvtl-i system is much more advanced and affects both cam light and cam duration on both the intake and the exhaust cam. Incidentally, the 2zz was Toyota's first engine to receive the vvtl-i version of Toyota's variable valve timing technology. All of the differences between the 1zz and 2zz add up and the 2zz makes on average 50hp more than the 1zz depending on the particular engine, vehicle, market and tune. The 2zz-ge highest factory power output amounts to 190hp, while the 1zz highest stock power output is 130hp. So the 2zz makes more power than the 1zz, it also makes more torque but only marginally more, with the difference in torque being less than 10 Nm. This is of course due to the fact that the 1zz has more stroke than the 2zz engine. So what are your options when tuning a 2zz-ge engines? Well there's a bit of sad news on that one as the 2zz-ge doesn't really have a stage one. The 2zz is sort of already "tuned" from the factory and your typical bolt on mods won't really do anything, and will often result in a power loss rather than a power gain. That being said, the 2zz is a great swap into older, lighter, more analogue Toyotas. The Toyota Celica, Matrix and the Corolla were already getting heavy by the end of the 90s. A 2zz in an aw11, ae82, ae92 or even an ae86 makes sense. It's lighter yet more powerful than the older engines so the results are usually very fun! the 2zz is also a super popular swap into the mr2 spyder. But how do you get more power from the 2zz? Do what lotus did and bolt a supercharger onto it. Supercharger kits are still available for the 2zz. What about a 2zz turbo? You can do that too, but you will need new internals or a brand new engine as step one, and turboing some of the older Toyota engines is actually a bit easier. #d4a #2zzge #iconicengines

Not that this will stop the seemingly endless stream of questions regarding how to build a NA (Naturally Aspirated) 7th Gen, but here you are - this is the recipie and order that makes sense. Feel free to ask logical questions and make any relevant suggestions If you have a GT, buy a GTS or swap in a 2ZZ. It will make more power stock than your GT will with $8K in mods OK - now that we have that established - here is the rest of the formula. Just my two cents on the 7th gen GT-S and 2ZZ-GE engines and some of Scotty Kilmers comments on his video. I love the 7th gen, and the 2ZZ-GE. I own one. Does that give me some bias, I'm sure. But I'm pretty realistic, and understand that nothing is perfect, and to ask for such is silly. I'll take and work with the few flaws of the 2ZZ-GE that are present. The rewards for myself are exponentially greater. This build for me is to simply evoke an emotion in myself. The 2ZZ-GE is the heart of that emotion, and it's not going anywhere for me! If you asked me about any generation Celica, I'm gonna tell you that I love it. I think they all have their ups and downs, and are all worth love. They're a load of fun, and they look great doing it. RWD, AWD, FWD it simply doesn't matter. #savethedragons

Toyota Celica Performance Mods What up Car People? Ariel here. On the last episode I made a response to Scotty Kilmers video “Why not buy a Toyota Celica.” Where Scotty singles out the 7th gen Celica or ZZT231. While editing that video I thought it would be a good idea to put together a performance guide for people interested in the Celica platform specifically the 2zzge powered variant the Celica GTS or Celica T-Sport in some markets. Maintanence The first mod for any used car should be maintanance. I would recommend addressing any leaks by replacing gaskets as needed and resealing. Spark plugs and cleaning the mass air flow sensor regularly will keep your 2zzge healthy and responsive. Transmission fluid is often not spoken about but the Celica GTS doesn't have the strongest trans in the industry but thats common with FWD. Be sure to keep your transmission fluid fresh and use high quality fluid like Redline Shockproof. Transmission Fluid 🤍 Denso IK20 🤍 Intake Toyota CELICA GTS Short Ram Intake 🤍 Celica Cold Air Intake 🤍 An intake is a great way to add color to your engine bay and give you a bit of a deeper sound from the engine when accelerating. A cold air intake will give you the best response while a short ram will give the best sound. They will both suffer from heatsoak when compared to a stock air filter air box combo but only the cold air is succeptable to taking in water during heavy rain which can cause engine damage. Suspension BC Racing Coilovers 🤍 Megan Lowering Springs 🤍 Tein Basic Coilovers 🤍 KYB AGX Adjustable Strut 🤍 Exhuast My exhuast Invidia N1 🤍 The exhausts made for the Toyota Celica are usually of the axle back variety unless you buy the PPE mid pipe. They reduce restriction slightly but add great sound and performance feel. To get the full potential of any bolt ons a stand alone ECU is recommended. Tried and True performance. PPE Header PPE’s stainless steel racing headers are constructed of mandrel bent tubing sized to optimize your engine’s torque and power curves through the mid and high range for great gains you’ll feel on the street and on the track. Stainless steel construction means great looks and a long service life. DDPR Intake Manifold This is the next generation of our well known Long runner intake manifold - Perfect for most 2000 - 2002 Celicas. Delivers a fantastic increase in top end power with nice gains throughout the rev range and incredible throttle response. The Version 2 upgrades include additional bracing under the runners, a new CNC DDPR logo on the plenum, and most importantly, a new CNC blended TB flange to improve internal airflow in the plenum. This manifold requires the purchase of a Q45 or RMR throttle body - available separately. (1992-1994 Infinity Q45 is preffered for stock ECU - non traction control model). RMR 82.5mm is preferred with standalone engine management. Reliner9k 🤍R9ktuned – Taken from his Facebook page. 🤍 ????Important Reflash Information so please READ before sending a email or PM.???? I get asked this a lot, so might as well make a small FAQ to answer questions: Q: Can you reflash a Celica GTS (any year)? A: No, we can't reflash those ECU's. Q: Can you reflash the 03-04 Matrix XRS? A: No, we can't reflash those ECU's. Q: Can you reflash the UK Corolla ECU's? A: As far as I've seen no. The ECU's are similar to the Celica GTS which I can't reflash. This includes the newer 2005 ECU's I've seen. Q: What are the ECU's that are reflashable for the 2zz-ge? A: 89661-02C50 or 89661-02F80 (Found in the 05-06 Corolla/Matrix XRS) Q: Can I install a 05-06 XRS ECU in my "insert car here" and reflash that? A: Technically yes, but you would need to install the complete harness off a 05-06 Corolla/Matrix and the complete immobilizer system including key cylinder and key to make it work. Q: I have a Celica GTS or 03-04 XRS, what can I do to tune my car? A: Go standalone. Depending on budget you have options such as the Apexi Power FC and AEM EMS4 as well as other more expensive ECU options.
