What is DHCP? This animated computer networks video explains DHCP or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It gives details of how DHCP works, DHCP DORA process, types of DHCP messages, and DHCP packet format. How DHCP server assigns an IP address to DHCP client? Explained in detail. Notes : 🤍 Facebook : 🤍 DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol and is used to assign TCP/IP settings to the end systems, like computers, dynamically if the automatic IP settings are enabled for them. When a laptop, with automatic IP settings enabled, is connected to the internet the laptop runs DHCP protocol. As a result, the DHCP server assigns an IP address to your laptop. DORA process involves the transmission of four DHCP messages including Discover, Offer, Request and Acknowledgment. Suppose we connect our computer to the internet. At that time, it does not have an IP address. So, the Laptop or DHCP client sends a DHCP Discover message to the DHCP server. In response, DHCP server sends an IP address in DHCP Offer message. DHCP client, then, ask the DHCP server to allocate the offered IP address for it with DHCP Request message. DHCP server then allocates an IP address to the DHCP client and sends a confirmation with DHCP Acknowledgement message. On receiving the acknowledgement, DHCP client configures TCP/IP settings in the OS so that the laptop can access the internet. In the second case, the DHCP server is present in some other subnet. In such a case, the relay agent act as a middleman between DHCP client and DHCP server. DHCPDISCOVER messages from the client is received by the relay agent. As the relay agent knows the IP address of the DHCP server, so it unicasts the received message to the DHCP server and fills the GIAddr field with the IP address of the interface at which the relay agent has received the message. Gateway IP address gives information to the DHCP server about the subnet where the DHCP client is present. The DHCP server then reply with unicast DHCPOFFER message to the relay agent with an offered IP address based on the subnet information. The router then broadcasts the reply within the subnet. DHCP client receives the DHCPOFFER and then broadcasts DHCPREQUEST requesting to allocate the offered IP address. Router again unicasts this message to DHCP server. The server unicasts DHCPACK to the router. The router then broadcasts it within the subnet. DHCP client on receiving the DHCPACK message configures the TCP/IP settings and becomes ready to load the web pages. DHCPNAK, DHCPRELEASE, DHCPDECLINE, DHCPINFORM are the other DHCP messages. Therefore, a total of 8 DHCP messages are involved in the DHCP process. Basics of DHCP


In this video from ITFreeTraining I will look at the basics of how Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or DHCP works. Once we understand the basics, the rest of the course will look at how to deploy and configure DHCP in your organization. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) 0:17 DHCP was first developed in the early 90’s. It is designed to dynamically distribute network configuration. There were other methods designed before this, but they did not include all the features of DHCP. DHCP is now the standard for distributing network configuration. DHCP Components 0:34 To understand how DHCP works, I will first look at the components that make up DHCP. First, there is the DHCP server component. This contains all the configuration for DHCP and responds back to client requests for network configuration. The next component is the DHCP client. This is the device on the network that sends requests to the DHCP server. The server will respond back and the client will use this configuration. The last component is the DHCP protocol. This defines the messages that are sent over the network between the DHCP server and the DHCP client. Since the DHCP protocol is an open protocol, all devices on the network can use it. All Windows’ client and server operating systems support the DHCP Client. Also, all Windows Servers support the DHCP server component. On the Linux side, all distributions support the DHCP client. There are also many different implementations of the DHCP server. So regardless if you are using Windows, Linux or another operating system, your client and server will support DHCP. DHCP Allocation Methods 1:51 The next part of DHCP that I will look at is DHCP allocation methods. DHCP allocates IP Addresses to devices on the network from pools. In Windows, these pools are called scopes. There are three different ways it can allocate IP Addresses. The first is dynamic. If you consider that there are a number of devices on the network, these devices can be anything; desktops, phones, laptops or mobile devices. Any devices that support DHCP which nowadays includes devices like smart TVs. If you can connect the device to a network, it is more than likely that it supports DHCP. When using the dynamic method of allocating IP addresses, devices are assigned an IP Address from a pool of addresses. Once assigned, the device can use that IP Address. After a period of time, the device will need to renew the IP Address if it wants to continue to use it. If the device does not renew the IP Address, the IP Address is free to be allocated to another device. The dynamic method of IP Address allocation is commonly used on DHCP servers. For example, the default configuration of a home DSL device will generally use the dynamic method to allocate IP addresses. Dynamic allocation allows devices to come and go from the network. If you consider a free wireless hotspot, for example in a café, you want it to have the ability to allow any device to connect to it. If the device is disconnected for a short period of time, for example an hour or so, you want the device to be able to continue to use the same IP Address. However, if the device is disconnected for an extended period of time, like days, it may not be connecting back to that network. It makes sense that when this occurs, the DHCP server should reclaim the IP Address. If this did not occur, a device could connect to a network the one time, never connect to it ever again but be permanently allocated an IP Address on that network. The next method of allocation is automatic. The method differs from dynamic in that when a device is allocated an IP Address, it is permanently allocated that IP Address. This is useful in companies where there are a limited number of devices connecting to the network. The advantage is that even if the device changes networks, when it returns to the previous network, it will always get the same IP Address. Having the same IP Address allocated for each device is useful for auditing. If you find the IP Address in a log file, you know the IP Address belongs to that dev ice. However, using the dynamic allocation method, a single IP Address could have been used by many devices. Using the automatic allocation method, allows you to be sure that only that device was using that IP Address. DHCP explained- DORA Process


We all use mobile phones and laptops or pc at home or at office to access network resources such as internet or a printer etc. To access the network and its resources every device on a TCP/IP-based network must have a unique unicast IP address. Along with IP address each device must be assigned a default gateway and IP Address of DNS servers Two basic IP address assignment methods: Static Dynamic ■ Static: An IP address is statically assigned to a device by the administrator. The administrator configures the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and name servers IP manually. Static address assignment is an extra burden for the administrator—especially on large-scale networks— who must configure the address on every end system in the network. ■ Dynamic IP addresses are assigned to the end systems by DHCP server. DHCP stands for dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol used for address assignment. With DHCP, this entire process is automated and managed centrally. This method relieves the administrator of manually assigning an address to every network device. On the client machine you have to select the option as obtain ip add and dns automatically. It automatically provides all the parameters to the end device DHCP Scope is a pool of IP addresses or usually a range of consecutive numbers within a single IP subnet maintained by DHCP server. DHCP server assigns IP’s to the client from this pool/scope. Any numbers that the administrator does not want to have handed out can be excluded from the pool DHCP adopts the concept of a “lease” in IP allocation. It sets a “lease duration” and allow the client to use the allocated IP address only during the set lease duration. If the client want to renew or wishes to use the allocated IP address for longer than the lease duration, it should request the DHCP server for renewal of the lease. If the device is disconnected or powered off , it releases the IP instead and returns to the pool for reallocation. #DHCP #DORA #CCNA #IP what happens when DHCP client requests an IP address from DHCP Server.  There are some messages which are exchanged between the DHCP Server and Client. This process is divided in to four steps  1. DHCPDISCOVER : * When a DHCP client first boots up, it broadcasts a DHCPDiscover message. This message is intiated from DHCP Client to DHCP Server, to find the DHCP server on the local network 2. DHCPOFFER : If a DHCP server exists on the local segment, it will respond with a DHCPOffer. This offer message is From DHCP Server to DHCP Client , to offer the IP Parameters, which contains IP address, subnet mask etc. 3. DHCPREQUEST: * Once the client receives the offer, it will respond with a DHCPRequest, indicating that it will accept the offered protocol information. * This message is from DHCP Client to DHCP Server, giving a request to get the offered IP Parameters 4. DHCPACK: Finally, the server responds with DHCPAck, acknowledging the client acceptance of offered protocol information This message is from DHCP server to DHCP Client, giving confirmation to use the the offered IP parameters. This process is also known as DORA process. DHCP is a UDP service. Uses two UDP port numbers for its operations DHCP Server uses the UDP port 67 and DHCP client uses UDP port 68. Use of ports number prevents an application from getting a message from a completely different protocol. If the client and server are on different subnets, well a DHCP Helper or DHCP Relay Agent must be used in this case.
