31.01.2021

Pia Eichinger, Ralf Ramsauer, Stefanie Scherzinger, Wolfgang Mauerer 🤍 It's needless to mention that the kernel is obviously split into several subsystems. But what defines a subsystem? An entry in MAINTAINERS? Then there would be more than 2000 of them, which is clearly not the case. As there is no official definition of ›subsystems‹, we want to identify them: We are interested of what subsystems the kernel actually consists of and how they are related to each other. This is helpful for newcomers, to get a better insight in the kernel, but also for industrial vendors performing development process analysis. This promises benefits for developers and the community. But beyond this, a precise documentation and definition of subsystems is also necessary for upcoming challenges like certifications in safety critical environments (for instance, as aspired by the Linux Foundation's ELISA project). Proper documentation also eases general quality ensurance, provides help for longterm maintenance, and lowers the initial learning curve for newcomers. Therefore, we decided to take a look at the bigger picture. Quite literally, actually. Our talk discusses methods to visualise the entire repository subsystem topology using graphs based on data mining in the kernel. It measures intersections of responsibility for MAINTAINERS entries, and clusters them based on overlap intensity, effectively detecting de-facto subsystems. It reveals sensible, though sometimes surprising, structures, compares the differences between de-facto and documented subsystems, and shows numerous possibilities for using the data, ranging from improvements to the development process to formal safety-critical certification efforts. linux.conf.au is a conference about the Linux operating system, and all aspects of the thriving ecosystem of Free and Open Source Software that has grown up around it. 此次線上講座中,我們將回顧若干作業系統術語及概念,像是: userspace vs. kernel space, Monolithic kernel vs. Microkernel, Address space, sharing between virtual address space, Execution context, Multi-tasking, Preemptive kernel, Symmetric MultiProcessing (SMP), CPU Scalability, Copy-On-Write, lock。探討的過程中,我們除了將術語對應到 Linux 核心外,也會參照 Solaris, MS-Windows, Plan 9, CMU Mach 等經典作業系統來解說。 Help us caption & translate this video! 🤍

Exploring Linux Kernel Source Code with Eclipse and QTCreator - Marcin Bis Getting through millions lines of Linux kernel source code is tough task. Especially for a person not used to editors like Vim or Emacs, which both are powerful tools, yet hard to configure and sometimes considered misleading. The talk will cover usage of two open-source IDEs: Eclipse (mostly) and QTCreator to develop device drivers and explore kernel source code using various cross toolchains (including SDK generated by Yocto Project tools, with, and without dedicated plugins). IDE configuration, good practices, side-to-side examples of good and bad IDE configuration and its influence on development process. The talk will include presentation and short tutorial - practical demonstration of Eclipse configuration, writing and debugging kernel driver on remote ARM platform, Material is based on author's personal experience of working on various projects. About Marcin Bis I have been dealing with Linux in embedded systems since 2007. I run a consulting company bis-linux.com. I help my customers to create business value on every step of product life-cycle by mentoring engineers and working as Embedded Linux Engineer or Technical Leader. I provide Embedded Linux, Drivers Development and Yocto trainings (both: open and on-site). I wrote books covering Embedded Linux topics (in Polish 2007, 2005). I have experience in usage of Embedded Linux in Real-Time system, which I share by providing talks at conferences (incl. ELCE 2012, 2013).

While Linux is running our phones, friend requests, tweets, financial trades, ATMs and more, most of us don't know how it's actually built. This short video takes you inside the process by which the largest collaborative development project in the history of computing is organized. Based on the annual report "Who Writes Linux," this is a powerful and inspiring story of how Linux has become a community-driven phenomenon. This video shows you how to start developing your own OS using Linux for your kernel. Not the same as "Linux from scratch", this focuses on developing your own, at the low level of course! This is the first video in the series, I hope you enjoy and please comment with any questions you have. I was thinking of making this video since a year, but finally, I did it! As I couldn't find a new and straightforward tutorial for compiling the Linux kernel from source, I made one for you. In this video, I have shown you how to download and compile the Linux kernel on Ubuntu, Debian, MX Linux, elementaryOS, Linux Mint, Zorin OS or any Debian based Linux distribution. 🔗 LINKS: Article ᐉ 🤍 Linux Kernel ᐉ 🤍 Lilo ᐉ 🤍 BURG ᐉ 🤍 Syslinux ᐉ 🤍 💬 FOLLOW ME FOR UPDATES: 🤍 👋 JOIN THE COMMUNITY: 🤍 💻 MY PROJECTS & CODE: 🤍 🏝️ WALLPAPER: Photo by Lorenzo Herrera on Unsplash 🤍 🎵 BACKGROUND MUSIC: Tropical Traveller by Del. 🤍 Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: 🤍 Music promoted by Audio Library 🤍 🏷️ TAGS: #vasanthdeveloper #linux #kernel #compilation #operatingsystem Keep knowing, keep growing 🤓

Watch Linux kernel developers shoot laser beams of code goodness into the source code tree! This is a gource video of the last 24 years of development. I highly recommend watching the 1080p version unless you have extraordinary eyesight. The video begins with v0.01 and ends with v4.0. Note: Commits before the adoption of BitKeeper are (incorrectly) attributed to Linus Torvalds due to the lack of attribution information. Unlike the previous video, dates should be more or less correct here.
