MBDA’s Future Attack Helicopter Weapon and the combat proven Brimstone missile


MBDA’s proposed FAHW solution builds on the highly acclaimed and combat-proven (98.7% effectiveness rate) to specifically meet Attack Helicopter Weapon requirements. The system provides operators with the ability to reliably and simply engage – in both direct and indirect fire modes – a wide range of target types with its multi range warhead. MBDA’s Brimstone provides crews with a world-beating, low-collateral, precision strike capability, including use in cluttered urban environments where surgical accuracy is paramount. Described as ‘the Swiss army knife of available weaponry’, there is nothing that compares to Brimstone in-service in the world today. It offers true dual mode functionality by combining a millimetric wave radar seeker with a sensitive Semi-Active Laser capability. Brimstone can be fired in all-weather conditions and in a number of attack profiles: direct or indirect against single targets, or columns of targets. It is also effective against an array if targets by utilising a salvo attack capability of multiple kills per engagement. Brimstone opens new opportunities for precision effects and its advanced capabilities remove many of the obstacles that have faced aircrew. They now possess a weapon that is cleared for use in restrictive scenarios such as engagement of targets in high collateral risk and urban areas, and that has the technological capability to engage fleeting, manoeuvring or high speed threats. Brimstone entered service with the RAF on 31 March 2005 and can be integrated on a range of platforms including fast jet, rotary wing and UAVs. Essentially, this capability means that Brimstone can take out the target, and only the intended target, with confidence and without becoming ‘distracted’ by other entities and with a range of tailored effects including blast, penetration and airshot. It is the product of choice for moving targets and counter insurgency scenarios, particularly in built up, urban environments. Brimstone can discriminate between targets in ways that other products simply can’t and while all other competitors operate either a laser or radar guidance system, Brimstone leads the market by being the only product to offer this truly simultaneous and multi-mode weapon capability. An additional unique factor is Brimstone’s status as an insensitive munition; a critical requirement for QE Class ships achieved through the use of unique UK technologies such as strip steel laminate rocket motors. This provides an unmatched and enhanced level of crew and platform survivability and means it does not offer a threat to friendly forces even if damaged by bullets, fragments or fuel fires. Brimstone has been combat proven in a range of harsh environments since 2005 and, to date, several hundred Brimstone missiles have been used in the likes of Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya, forming the cornerstone of RAF counter-insurgency activity in these campaigns where it has close to a 99% success rate in operations. According to pictures released on Twitter, the French army fired the first Mistral 3 surface-to-air missiles during live firing exercise from the Île du Levant, a French island in the Mediterranean off the coast of the Riviera, near Toulon, France.

Romania plans to spend some four billion euros to acquire a new anti-air missile system for it's Air and Land forces. Officials have mentioned the Patriot system, but as of yet no final decision has been made. The European group MBDA says their offering SAMP/T system with the newest Aster 30 missile available and they say it is better than the Patriot offer. A 360 degree radar, open architecture of the battle command and control unit and an openness to develop industrial cooperation with Romania's national weapon industry - some of the key aspects that MBDA says it has over any potential current-day Patriot deal.

MBDA Storm Shadow General Purpose Long Range Air Launched Cruise Missile


Storm Shadow / SCALP is the air-launched long range, conventionally armed, deep strike weapon, designed to meet the demanding requirements of pre-planned attacks against high value fixed or stationary targets. Able to be operated in extreme conditions, the weapon offers operators a highly flexible, deep-strike capability based around a sophisticated mission planning system. Storm Shadow is a British, French and Italian low-observable air-launched cruise missile, manufactured by MBDA. Storm Shadow is the British name for the weapon; in French service it is called SCALP EG (Système de Croisière Autonome à Longue Portée – Emploi Général, meaning General Purpose Long Range Cruise Missile). The missile is based on the earlier MBDA Apache anti-runway missile, and differs in that it carries a warhead, rather than submunitions. The missile has a range of approximately 560 km (300 nautical miles), is powered by a turbojet at Mach 0.8 and can be carried by the RAF Tornado GR4, Italian Tornado IDS, Saab Gripen, Dassault Mirage 2000 and Dassault Rafale aircraft. Storm Shadow was integrated with the Eurofighter Typhoon as part of the Phase 2 Enhancement (P2E) in 2015,[8][9] but it will not be fitted to the F-35 Lightning II once that aircraft comes into service.[10] The BROACH warhead features an initial penetrating charge to clear soil or enter a bunker, then a variable delay fuze to control detonation of the main warhead. The missile weighs about 1,300 kilograms (2,900 lb), has a maximum body diameter of 48 centimetres (19 in) and a wingspan of 3 metres (120 in). Intended targets are command, control and communications; airfields; ports and power stations; AMS/ammunition storage; surface ships and submarines in port; bridges and other high value strategic targets. It is a fire and forget missile, programmed before launch. Once launched, the missile cannot be controlled or commanded to self-destroy and its target information cannot be changed. Mission planners programme the missile with the target air defences and target. The missile follows a path semi-autonomously, on a low flight path guided by GPS and terrain mapping to the target area. Close to the target, the missile climbs and then bunts into a dive. Climbing to altitude is intended to achieve the best probability of target identification and penetration. During the bunt, the nose cone is jettisoned to allow a high resolution thermographic camera (Infrared homing) to observe the target area. The missile then tries to locate its target based upon its targeting information (DSMAC). If it can not, and there is a high risk of collateral damage, it will fly to a crash point instead of risking inaccuracy. Recent enhancements include the capability to relay target information just before impact, usage of one-way (link back) data link, to relay battle damage assessment information back to the host aircraft. This upgrade is already under development under a French DGA contract. Another feature planned for insertion into the weapon is in-flight retargeting capability, using a two-way data link. Storm Shadow will be refurbished under the Selective Precision Effects At Range 4 (SPEAR 4) missile project. Storm Shadow / SCALP has been put into operations with the Royal Air Force and the French Air Force in 2003 and was used in the Gulf, Iraq and Libya. The weapon is now in service with three other nations giving unrivalled deep strike capability. Storm Shadow / SCALP is operated from Tornado, Rafale, Mirage 2000 and in the future from Eurofighter Typhoon. Some reports suggest a reduced capability version complying with Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) restrictions was created for export, for example to the United Arab Emirates.

The Enforcer shoulder launched weapon system provides low-collateral precision effects capabilities against the threat from lightly armored static and moving targets, targets behind cover, and against targets at long ranges in urban environments. The modular design of the Enforcer system enables a range of future development options, including a prospective ‘family’ of Enforcer munitions for land, air, and sea applications. MMP is the latest (fifth) generation land combat missile system designed for dismounted infantry as well as for integration on combat vehicles. The weapon's effectiveness has also been proven on small naval craft as well. Featuring both fire-and-forget and man-in-the-loop operation, network-enabled MMP also receives third party target designation for indirect firing scenarios. MMP has a multi-purpose warhead with the selectable choice of anti-armor of anti-infrastructure modes.

MMP fifth generation land combat missile system - MBDA


MMP is the latest (fifth) generation land combat missile system designed for dismounted infantry as well as for integration on combat vehicles. Featuring both fire-and-forget and man-in-the-loop operation, network-enabled MMP also receives third party target designation for indirect firing scenarios. MMP is fitted with a Multi Purpose Warhead with excellent “weight over efficiency” ratio. The high penetration of MMP tandem warhead allows destruction of all target set including modern MBT overprotected with latest generation ERA. MMP will replace the Milan and Javelin anti-tank missiles in service with the French Army and special forces from 2017. Taking into account the battle experience gained from recent conflicts in which the French Army has been engaged, MMP is a response to the demands that have been expressed in terms of required capabilities: firing from confined spaces, “fire-and-forget”, and self-guidance with a “man-in-the-loop” facility. The Aspide 2000 missile is the powerful upgraded version of the Aspide multi-role missile for use in surface-to-air systems, developed by MBDA. Aspide 2000’s operational performance has been enhanced making the missile capable of engaging attacking aircraft before they can release their airborne stand-off rocket propelled missiles. Thanks to its outstanding capabilities at range, it can ensure a wide area defence against all type of air threats. The Aspide 2000 missile is equipped with an enhanced single stage rocket motor to increase the missile speed, lateral acceleration and effective range by as much as 40% compared to the Aspide baseline missile. It incorporates all modern electronic features to improve its guidance characteristics and effectiveness in heavy clutter and ECM environments. NCM (Naval Cruise Missile)


MBDA has developed its NCM (Naval Cruise missile) to meet requirements issued by the French Ministry of Defence for a long range cruise missile capable of being launched from surface and below surface vessels (this French programme is known as MdCN or Missile de Croisiere Naval). The ability to strike strategic and military targets with exceptional precision from extended stand-off ranges has become a key operational requirement. MBDA’s experience and expertise in this area has already been proven with the development and entry into service of the Storm Shadow/SCALP air-launched cruise missile. This combat-proven missile system, with its unmatched capabilities, was the result of a multi-national European cooperation programme between France, Italy and the UK. NCM provides a unique operational capability with long range metric precision strike options against targets in all weather conditions and environments. The missile has been designed for vertical launch from France’s FREMM frigates using the company A70 SYLVER vertical launcher, which is also capable of housing other MBDA missiles including the Aster family of air defence missiles. As the missile is not launched from a plane like SCALP/Storm Shadow, a booster has been included in its design. NCM also provides a much larger range than these missiles and one that’s comparable to the BGM-109 Tomahawk. The submarine version is encapsulated in a hydrodynamic hard container which is ejected when the missile reaches the surface. The first test flight of the Naval Cruise Missile from a vertical launcher took place on 28 May 2010 and its first submarine launch test took place on 8 June 2011. The first complete qualification firing took place on 9 July 2012 at the Biscarosse test range and during its third development firing, the missile met all its test requirements perfectly, including the validation of the terminal autonomously guided phases with IR target scenario reconnaissance, which provides the weapon with its exceptionally high precision. In October of that year, the Naval Cruise Missile was tested ‘end-to-end’ in the submarine launch configuration for the first time. The missile entered service with FREMM frigates in February 2017. Euronaval: MBDA launches the new VL MICA NG air defence system


Ahead of Euronaval Online, the digital edition of Euronaval 2020, Stefano Bertuzzi, Head of Naval Systems at MBDA, explains to Naval News the capabilities of the VL MICA NG surface to air missile for surface ships. = Based on an entirely new design, the MICA NG missile inherits the external dimensions and unique concept that has made the MICA anti-air missile such a success for a quarter of a century. This concept means MICA features either an infrared or a radio frequency seeker on the same common missile body, allowing the operator, at the moment of firing, to select the best option to respond to the tactics adopted by the adversary. On the MICA NG, a new infrared seeker based on a matrix sensor will provide increased sensitivity, while a new radio frequency seeker with an active electronically scanned antenna (AESA) will allow for smart detection strategies. The lower volume of electronic components will enable the MICA NG to carry a larger load of propellant, significantly extending its range, and the new dual-pulse rocket motor will provide additional energy to the missile at the end of its flight, improving its manoeuvrability and its ability to intercept targets at long range. In surface-to-air mode, the MICA NG will be able to intercept targets over 40 km away. Finally, maintenance and ownership costs will be significantly reduced thanks to internal sensors that will monitor the status of the munition throughout its life cycle. French Army Fires MMP Land Combat Missile at over 5000m range


In early May 2018, the French Army fired a combat version of the 5th generation land combat missile MMP on its firing range at Canjeurs in the Alps at a remarkable range of over 5000m. Although the firing was executed in complex conditions (rain, wind and at a ground altitude of over 800m on a fleeting target with reduced signature), the missile hit the target right in the centre after a nominal flight. MBDA’s MMP has been qualified in June 2016 by the French Army which has been operating the missile since November 2017. MMP (Missile Moyenne Portee) is the unique fifth generation land combat missile designed by MBDA for dismounted infantry as well as for integration on combat vehicles. MMP possesses a next generation seeker and tandem warhead in addition to automatic seeker lock on and in-flight targeting and re-targeting. MMP is a lightweight weapon system that delivers a high level of day and night, all-weather reconnaissance and identification capability. Its design includes the growth potential necessary for a future family of missiles designed for modern land combat scenarios and operations. It possesses a high level of tactical flexibility in order to meet the most demanding operational requirements. The weapon covers BVR situations and in addition offers two guidance systems with its two interoperable seekers: - RF MICA with radar seeker providing all weather shoot-up/shoot-down capability - IR MICA with dual waveband imaging infrared seeker surpassing latest generation AAM missiles. First firing of the new Brimstone 3 strike missile


The Brimstone 3 ultra-high precision missile system has successfully achieved a major milestone by completing its first firing trial at the Vidsel Trials range in Sweden. Whilst enduring extreme weather conditions with temperatures below -30°C, the missile was surface launched against a pick-up truck target. All trials objectives were fully achieved with the missile proving, through a telemetry unit, full closed loop guidance with the seeker progressing into target acquisition and track. Russell Jamieson, Chief Engineer, said: “The trial further proves Brimstone’s fully flexible platform approach, providing a “one missile, multiple platform” capability, for surface launch, fast jet, remotely piloted air systems (RPAS), attack helicopter, land and maritime platforms, all utilising the same missile. The result really was a tremendous success, and thanks to the hard work and determination of the whole team.” The demonstrated surface to surface capability builds on the advanced guidance and targeting abilities developed during the Brimstone programme and from hundreds of successful operational firings against targets in structures, main battle tanks/armoured vehicles, maritime vessels, trucks, fast moving and manoeuvring cars/motorbikes and individual targets in the open. Brimstone 3 is the product of the Brimstone Capability Sustainment Programme (CSP), announced in March 2018, that will provide new Brimstone missiles for the UK Armed Forces in order to replenish the country’s inventory and to maintain the UK’s battlefield edge into the future. It will also provide the ability to fully meet current and future export supply needs. The new-build Brimstone missiles will incorporate all of the improved functionalities offered by the spiral upgrades of Brimstone that have taken place over recent years which include the highly capable Dual Mode semi-active laser (SAL)/millimetric wave (mmW) seeker, enhanced autopilot, and the new insensitive munition compliant rocket motor and warhead, all combining to provide unique performance capabilities of Brimstone against the most challenging of targets. Poland & MBDA develop anti-tank armed with Brimstone missiles!


Nine companies from Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), Poland have signed a cooperation agreement with Britain's MBDA for the development of anti-tank fighting vehicles. The agreement allows the design and production of combat vehicles to be armed with MBDA UK-made Brimstone anti-tank missiles. This is one of the weapon options offered by PGZ in the Ottokar-Brzoza program. ASRAAM is the Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air missile (ASRAAM) currently in service with the Air Forces of the UK, Australia and India. MBDA’s ASRAAM missile flies at over Mach 3 and its sleek, agile airframe and powerful motor ensure that the missile can fly faster and further than competing short range air-to-air missiles. ASRAAM’s sophisticated seeker and software is designed to defeat current and future countermeasures. In WVR air combat the ability to strike first is vital. A pilot engaging an enemy needs a missile that reacts more rapidly than ever before with the speed and agility to maximise the probability of a kill, regardless of evasive manoeuvring or countermeasure deployment. ASRAAM has proven this capability. ASRAAM accepts target information via aircraft sensors, such as the radar or helmet-mounted sight, but can also act as an autonomous infrared search and track system. ASRAAM is in service with the UK RAF as its Within Visual Range (WVR) dominance weapon. The weapon is also in operational service with the Royal Australian Air Force on its F/A-18 Hornet and is scheduled to be integrated on India’s SEPECAT Jaguar strike aircraft to replace the ageing Matra Magic R550.
