Artist Christine Sun Kim was born deaf, and she was taught to believe that sound wasn't a part of her life, that it was a hearing person's thing. Through her art, she discovered similarities between American Sign Language and music, and she realized that sound doesn't have to be known solely through the ears — it can be felt, seen and experienced as an idea. In this endearing talk, she invites us to open our eyes and ears and participate in the rich treasure of visual language. This video includes sign language basics and baby first words, songs, and flashcards. It’s full of useful baby signs and gestures that help develop language. The video can be watched by babies, babies and adults or even just adults to learn the sign language to practice with their baby. The video can also be helpful for toddlers in practicing their speech and language. Signs this video covers includes ones that I found most useless for my baby! Sign language includes: Milk, more, eat, all done, mama, dada, no, yes, diaper change, open, help, again. This is a full episode of signs, songs, flash cards, and more! For part of the video, I worked with the brilliant speech language pathologists (speech therapists) at Chatterbox NYC. I am not a speech therapist myself. I am a music teacher with a masters in music education. I focus a lot in the video on showing gestures. Gestures are incredibly important building blocks for language development. You may feel like you just want to focus on words, but gestures and imitation are very important in learning speech! For the filling in the blanks- if you’re toddler can’t say “go” you can throw the ball or make the toy work, or do whatever they want you do do, when they look at you- or when they make any sound. It shows them the power of their voice. If you hold a toy that lights up away from them, and then you say, “Ready, set…” and then they make any sound, press the button to make it light up. They don’t have to get it right. Just show them that making sounds and using their voice gets them what they want. If they can’t make a sound, do it when they look at you. A helpful way to teach the sign for “more” is to give them a little of their favorite food. When they are done the few pieces, say, “Do you want MORE” and do the sign for “more.” Then give them a little more of the food. Repeat this process many times. You can gently use hand over hand to help them do the sign for “more” before you give them the food as well. Songs are wonderful for teaching gestures, imitation and language. Then end of the video shows many songs that are great for practicing gestures. I do not use background music because, although it would be more entertaining, I believe it’s important for babies and toddlers to just hear the voice alone. The hidden history of an ancient language. Subscribe and turn on notifications 🔔 so you don't miss any videos: 🤍 Centuries before we had American Sign Language, Native sign languages, broadly known as “Hand Talk,” were thriving across North America. Hand Talk would be influential in the formation of American Sign Language. But it has largely been written out of history. One of these Hand Talk variations, Plains Indian Sign Language, was used so widely across the Great Plains that it became a lingua franca — a universal language used by both deaf and hearing people to communicate among tribes that didn’t share a common spoken language. At one point, tens of thousands of indigenous people used Plains Indian Sign Language, or PISL, for everything from trade to hunting, conflict, storytelling, and rituals. But by the late 1800s, the federal government had implemented a policy that would change the course of indigenous history forever: a violent boarding school program designed to forcibly assimilate indigenous children into white American culture — a dark history that we’re still learning more about to this day. Because of a forced “English-only” policy, the boarding school era is one of the main reasons we lost so many Native signers — along with the eventual dominance of ASL in schools for the deaf. Today, there are just a handful of fluent PISL signers left in the US. In the piece above we hear from two of these signers who have dedicated their lives to studying and revitalizing the language. They show us PISL in action, and help us explore how this ancient language holds centuries of indigenous history. Note: The headline on this piece has been updated. Previous headline: Before American Sign Language, we had "Hand Talk" Read more from Melanie McKay-Cody on the history of Plains Indian Sign Language: 🤍 Check out Lanny Real Bird’s videos: 🤍 Much of the footage of the 1930 Indian Sign Language Council isn’t online, but check out some of it here: 🤍 Here are some original books we reference on sign talk: 🤍 🤍 The Smithsonian holds lots of photos and archives on Plains Indian Sign Language like this: 🤍 Sarah Klotz on how Native American boarding schools like Carlisle contributed to the loss of PISL: 🤍 She references archives that shows how students continued to use sign language like this one from the Carlisle Indian School Digital Resource Center: 🤍 Have an idea for a story that we should investigate for Missing Chapter? Drawn to the stage at a young age, Andy started doing Sign Language with his mum after she had an invasive surgery and had to relearn how to use her body again. During this time, he became fascinated with the many ways with which we communicate, and decided that music and performance needed to be more inclusive of the deaf community. Incorporating signing into his performances he invented 'sign dance' and went on to be the founding member of the Auslan Choir. In a world-first, Andy Dexterity is the first-ever sign language artist on The Voice Stage. 🚨 Song info: Andy Dexterity performed ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon 🚨 Series info: In #TheVoiceStage we highlight the best, funniest, most adorable, and most inspiring stories of talents who audition for The Voice. Koko, the adored gorilla known for her sign language skills, has died at the age of 46. Koko rose to fame in the 1970s when an animal psychologist named Francine "Penny" Patterson taught her how to communicate. She graced the cover of National Geographic twice and understood about 2,000 words of spoken English. The late Robin Williams once called his interaction with Koko "a mind-altering experience." It’s so much fun to get together! Everything is better when you’re doing it with friends! Have fun singing and dancing along with this classic nursery rhyme song! Subscribe: 🤍 Watching good quality kids' shows can be a great support in a child's development. It is a way to explore emotions in a safe space, learn about relating to other people and about basic concepts such as vocabulary and counting. We believe all kids should have access to good quality entertainment - regardless of geography, culture, background or abilities. This is why we are making our hugely popular kids show 'CoComelon' available to all kids in ASL. Having a common cultural frame of reference is incredibly important for kids. And we are acutely aware that there is not currently the same abundance of content and choice available to kids who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, which other kids have. Which is why we are now signing our new content so that every kid, regardless of their abilities, can also enjoy and learn with CoComelon. Lyrics: The more we get together, Together, together The more we get together The happier we’ll be! For your friends are my friends And my friends are your friends The more we get together The happier we’ll be! The more we sing together, Together, together The more we sing together The happier we’ll be! The more we dance together, Together, together The more we dance together The happier we’ll be! The more we play together, Together, together The more we play together The happier we’ll be! #CoComelon #ASL #SignLanguage #MyGo!
In this video, Muharrem was secretly filmed as he walked through his neighbourhood with his sister, Ozlem, and the people in his neighbourhood "talked" to him using sign language! The effect on Muharrem was truly touching. Although it was revealed at the end that this was really an advertisement Samsung made in Turkey for their "Duyan Eller" or Hearing Hands service, it showed how hearing-impaired people like Muharrem can be so deeply touched by nothing more than simple communication. Great job, Samsung! And thank you to 🤍Attila The Turk for this description in Turkish and English! Firmaların kâr ederken bir yandan sosyal sorumluluk projeleri geliştirmeleri çok zor değil.
