If I were buying a new bike or upgrading my component group today, would I buy SRAM or Shimano? In this video we run through some of the pros and cons of each system and why I prefer SRAM for new bikes and upgrades in 2022. Owning a Specialized S-Works Aethos with SRAM Red eTap AXS and a Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7 with Shimano Dura Ace Di2 for the last thousand miles has given me some appreciation for both of these incredible systems. Of course, there is Campag, but it seems to be a dying bread in comparison to the two mentioned in this video. After recently putting a FACTOR 02 build project to vote, I had a ton of questions asking me why the only options were SRAM red AXS Red and SRAM red 22 mechanical. What about Shimano, Dura Ace etc? SRAM'S worst kept secret is their wireless electronic 12 speed groupset, which we now know is called Red eTap AXS.Our Senior Technical Editor Warren Rossiter has been riding the new groupset, in stealth, for the last few months, and was sworn to absolute secrecy until the official release. So much so that the bike even had to be kept away from BikeRadar's office and public places. With the embargo now lifted, we can finally give you the lowdown on one of the most exciting releases for 2019. Could this be the beginning of the end for cable groupsets? 5 Reasons Why I'm NOT Buying SRAM Red AXS

Pinarello supplied the AXS demo bike for a few weeks, and I was not paid for my opinion. Please support my channel and click the affiliate link below to buy SRAM AXS! 🤍 Today on real reviews I’m going to give you 5 reasons why I AM putting SRAM Red AXS on my next bike, and 5 reasons why I’m NOT - And I’m gonna try to do it in TWO MINUTES OR LESS. OK. Here we go! Before we get started a quick disclaimer: This is the VERY FIRST upload to my new channel, so I thought I’d do something a little different. If you’ve watched any of my old reviews, you probably came away saying something like “I wonder what they’re paying him to say that” or “nice sales pitch, Andy.” And, you know, you wouldn’t be too far off base - all of my reviews were PAID reviews. So to some degree, my opinions had to kinda stay between the guardrails. Not anymore. My goal with this channel is to give you my REAL review - the good and bad - so that you can make a more informed buying decision. Having said that, let’s put 2 minutes on the clock and get started with 5 reasons I’d build my next bike with SRAM Red AXS. 1 The shifting is smooth and crisp, and the gearing ratio on the 46/33 with a 10/33 is as close to perfect as I’ve ridden. The gaps between gears are ideal, and you can also use the smartphone app to set up flawless auto shifting between the chainrings. In the age of internal routing, wireless derailleurs are everything 2. I’m loyal to SRAM. 3. After ten years and probably a hundred thousand miles on everything from Rival to force to red to etap, it’s never failed me. And I’m rough on gear 4. SRAM is an American company that cares - They employ several thousand people here in the states, and through their charity World Bicycle Relief they’ve delivered millions of specially designed, locally assembled, rugged bicycles for people in need all over the world 5. I’m cheap and they make a Force version that’s damn near just as good as Red Now...as promised: here’s 5 reasons why I WOULDN’T build my next bike with SRAM Red AXS - plus one BONUS reason at the end. 1. Before I was a SRAM Guy, I was SHIMANO guy.Two years ago I want back and Shimano Dura Ace mechanical disc is tough to beat. 2. The shifting is quicker, quiter, and smoother 3. The brakes are benchmarks for power, modulation, overall feel and noise 4. It’s 12 speed and I’ve got too much 11 speed lying around 5. The price. 6. The silver chainrings 7. They make a Force version that’s damn near just as good. (time check - did we make it??) Listen, AXS is in every way a top-flight, pro-caliber group from probably my favorite bike company on the planet...and I’m thrilled that SRAM instantly trickled the tech down into their other gruppos. You REALLY can’t go wrong with anything in the eTap line - even the first generation 11speed version is insanely good and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next but at the moment I’m just not ready to make the jump to 12 speed, or away from Shimano. Thanks for watching! Before you go, please hit the subscribe button and hit me with your questions about SRAM AXS in the comments below. See ya next time.

SRAM have lifted the lid on their groundbreaking new wireless groupset. It's called SRAM Red eTap and Si Richardson talks us through the details. Subscribe to GCN: 🤍 It was all the way back in May of 2014 when Tom Last first spotted an electronic SRAM Groupset at the Tour of California. SRAM have spent the following 15 months refining this revolutionary completely wireless groupset. Well now, it's finished, and Si Richardson was the lucky person from GCN to take a first look, and bring you all the details. The derailleurs communicate with the shifters using 128 Bit AES encryption. All components therefore need their own batteries but SRAM have designed them to be easily removable. The method of shifting has also changed, with each hand responsible for either shifting up or down the cassette, and when both levers are pressed simultaneously the front derailleur is activated. SRAM RED eTap 11 Speed | Why I Love Wireless Shifting, Coming from Mechanical | As a Casual Cyclist

1904
51
7
00:06:54
11.04.2021

5 Reasons Why I Love SRAM Red eTap, or more broadly, wireless shifting: 1. Installation, fine-tuning and maintenance are easier than mechanical shifting (1:54) - No more barrel adjusters, challenges with indexing gears or crunchy drive trains. Because everything is wireless, installing the shifters, front and rear mechs are a breeze. And, if I want to micro adjust, I can do this easily with a certain button combination on the workstand or while I'm riding. So, no more excuses for having a loud drive-train! Coming from mechanical, this makes a world of difference because I was always finding myself fiddling with rear mech cables whether it was internal routing inside the frame, cutting the housing to length or just having to deal with the crappy barrel adjusters that come on certain rear mechs. Even with the older version of eTap that I have, it makes a world of difference when it comes to maintenance and optimizing the ride experience. 2. It helps clean up the look of the bike (2:56) - SRAM is true wireless, so there is so much more flexibility when it comes to picking a frame. For example, the frame I have is an older Cannondale SuperSix Evo high mod. Sure, the frame is Di2 ready, but this requires routing electronic cabling internally, finding a place to put the battery and mounting the junction box. And if I wanted to do mechanical shifting on this frame, all cables would be mounted on the outside of the frame, lame! Even with an older frame like my Cannondale, the only "cabling" you see on the bike is for my front and rear brakes, and even with this, a certain amount of Jagwire housing helps clean this up even more. And if you're on disk brakes, even better to achieve a modern, clean, cableless bike. 3. It connects with my head unit and relays additional data (3:57) - Do you ever find your self looking down at your front or rear gears to figure out where in the gear ratios you are? Maybe you're looking down in disbelief that you've run out of gears when doing a climb like I have. With SRAM eTap, I easily added a Gear Ratio data field on my headunit that relays this info. Now, I don't look down at my gears as much. Rather, I have begun to associate the gear ratios that appear on my head unit with the feel of the ride. I'm sure there are a multitude of other data fields one could add from SRAM eTap, this is just the one I find the most useful. 4. The form factor is ideal for smaller hands (4:43) - I've found that SRAM's levers tend to be a bit skinnier and more compact compared to Shimano Ultegra. Also, the additional micro adjustment on SRAM's levers were perfect for me. I have relatively smaller hands, so not having to shift my entire upper body to reach the brake levers has been a huge help. I can comfortably brake full force whether I'm on the hoods or drops with SRAM eTap levers. The other major detail of the shifting is the up and down shifting on the gears. With Shimano mechanical, the right lever is used to up and down the back cogs; the press of the inner lever moved down the cog, the press of the outer lever moved up the cog. The same concept on the left lever but with the front chainrings. With SRAM eTap, this is much easier and much more intuitive in my opinion. The right lever has one possibility, the press of the inner lever, which is similar to clicking a button on a mouse. And this moves down the cog. The left lever has the same concept, moving up the cog with a click of the inner lever. And how do you move up and down the front chainring? By pressing both at the same time, of course! For me this is really intuitive and much easier to actuate than mechanical shifting. If you find something satisfying in clicking a mouse button, you'll get some satisfaction out of SRAM eTap. 5. Consistently quiet and smooth drive train (5:15) - You know that buttery, gear turning sound you hear when riding along? I love that sound, and it's consistent 100% of the time as I take my bike on and off the trainer, take the back wheel on and off, etc. It's just consistently smooth and buttery every time I go out. And if something is off a little or I beging hearing crunchy sounds again, I can micro-adjust, which I have yet to do on the stand or on the road. The last thing I want to hear while on a solo ride is the crunchiness of an off tuned drive-train. And this switch has been the proven solution for this. Listen, I'm sure there are experienced bike mechanics out there that can tune mechanical gearing to be as good…I'm just not one of those guys. Dream Build Specialized Allez Sprint with the wonderful paint "Water Effect Black". Impressively Specialized proves that it does not always have to be the material carbon to build a superbike. Only at second glance you realize that it is not a Specialized Tarmac. No wonder, geometry, fork and frame shape are identical to those of the Specialized Tarmac SL7 frame. Using hydroforming complex tubes and frame parts are manufactured into a unique frame using smartwelding. The wonderful paint job transforms the bike into an object of art. We completed the bike with a SRAM RED AXS, a lightweight Roval Alpinist CLX wheelset and the brand new S-Works Turbo RapidAir tires. Have fun watching.

Love trickle-down tech? Well, here it is again from SRAM, with their first-ever Force-level eTap AXS wireless groupset offering. Check it out with Si as he takes his first ride on the new Force. And then, when the next generation RED eTap AXS groupset was launched at the beginning of 2019, inevitably one of the first questions was, seriously, when is it coming to Force? Well the answer, is NOW! More affordable wireless shifting, it’s finally happened and the big news is that functionally this shares exactly the same DNA as it’s more expensive bigger brother, Red. So, before we get onto what actually separates the two, let’s recap the key points of the new eTap AXS: As you can see SRAM, have kindly sent over a groupset on this stealthy new Orbea so that we can take you through it. Still the biggest one: There are no wires, and no cables, it’s wireless. Shifters communicate via SRAM’s own protocol with the derailleurs. Both shifters and derailleurs also feature the same upgraded hardware and software as the new Red AXS, meaning that they react just as fast and move just as quickly. . Shimano Dura-Ace v SRAM Red eTap AXS Review: Which is lighter SRAM Red or Dura-Ace?

Both SRAM Red eTap AXS and Shimano Dura-Ace are performance groupsets, both are each brand's top-end products and both are used by the pro racers on the international stage. With the latest R9200 version of Dura-Ace released in 2021 there are more similarities between the two road bike groupsets than there were, but plenty of differences still. SRAM Red eTap AXS and Shimano Dura-Ace are both now 12-speed and electronic only and both have wireless comms between the shifters and the derailleurs. Both are programmable with built-in Bluetooth, both are focused on disc brakes but also offer a rim brake option and both let you add an in-series power meter. We've got full reviews of our experience of riding both SRAM Red eTap AXS and Shimano Dura-Ace R9200, but if you're not sure which is for you and want a more direct comparison watch on.
