Find out everything you could ever want to know about common Buzzards including where buzzards live, what buzzards eat, where buzzards nest, how long buzzards live for and much more. The common Buzzard is a medium to large bird of prey that lives from the west coast of Ireland all across Europe and central Asia as far west as Japan and is even found in eastern Africa. Females are slightly larger than males and grow to have a wingspan of around 4 and a half feet and can weigh up to 1.4 kilos. Buzzards can be a wide variety of colours ranging from almost pure white to dark brown and black. They have a hook shaped beak with a bright yellow base and featherless yellow legs and feet. From below a buzzards silhouette shows a noticeable dark band around the edge of its wings and 5 primary feathers that extend from their ends. Buzzards can be found in most countryside habitats but do extremely well in traditional farming areas. Here they have open fields for hunting and also hedgerows and trees for roosting and nesting. They are capable hunters and often catch small rabbits, rodents and slower species of birds such as crows and wood pigeons but they are also opportunist scavengers and a large portion of their diet can be made up of carrion. Surprisingly, they also seem to have a taste for worms and can often be seen bounding across wet fields and meadows in search of them. Buzzards start nesting from three years of age when each pair will claim a territory and construct multiple nests from large twigs either high up in trees or I rocky crags. They usually build 3 to 4 but can have as many as 14 nest sites to choose from. Once they have decided on which nest to use, the pair have a curious habit of decorating the chosen nest site with fresh green leaves and branches although the purpose of this isn’t really known. Each female will lay between 2 and 5 eggs at 2 to 3 day intervals. These are 5 to 6cm long and white with sporadic red markings. The female does most of the incubation and as this starts from when the first egg is laid the first chick to hatch will often be noticeably larger than its siblings. This usually takes 33 to 35 days and when the chicks first hatch they are covered in white down. Both parents feed the chicks and if food is in short supply, the larger and older chicks will bully and out compete their siblings. It takes 55 days for the chicks to fledge after which point they stay with their parents for a further 6 to 8 weeks, learning to find food and fend for themselves. Each pair will only breed once per season and will often pick a different nest from their collection each year. Over the past 30 years Buzzards have done extremely well across most of Europe and there are now more than 300,000 breeding pairs in the UK alone. Although these are pretty hardy birds, as they are prone to scavenging they are quite susceptible to being accidently killed as a result of eating animals that have died after being poisoned or from eating poisoned bait. In the wild they have an average lifespan of between 12 and 20 years but one individual was found dead 30 years and five months after being ringed as a chick. Buzzards normally nest at dizzying heights. So when I discovered a common buzzard nest close to my home - and unusually within reach of a ladder - I set out to film the chicks. To support my channel and the wildlife rehabilitation and conservation work I do, please donate here: 🤍 UK COMMON BUZZARD (Buteo buteo) Here at Fotherdale, buzzards are a common sight, often spotted soaring overhead. These birds of prey are recognised by their broad, rounded wings and fanned tail, these magnificent birds are members of the Buteo family and are found on almost every continent. In the UK, they’re known as common buzzards, but in the US, their closest relative is the red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis). TRACKING DOWN THE NEST I’ve been following a pair of buzzards near my home throughout the seasons, you may have seen them on my livestreams. But I’ve never managed to get a camera on their nest. Then in spring, I spotted a pair taking interest in a nearby wood, a sign they could have a nest here. BUZZARD NEST Buzzards usually choose much larger trees and their nests can be massive structures, with new twigs and branches added each year. This nest was so small and so I wondered if it had been built recently, and in a hurry. It's possible their original nest was blown away during this spring's strong winds. THREE WEEK OLD BUZZARD CHICKS Inside the nest I found three chicks, still covered in fluffy down. I quickly set up remote cameras so that I didn't disturb this young buzzard family. LIFE INSIDE THE BUZZARD NEST My cameras went on to capture life inside the nest throughout the breeding season. Buzzard nests are exposed and it was interesting to see how comfortably the chicks coped during high winds. The female buzzard too seemed to enjoy navigating the uplifts. MEALTIMES Buzzards feed on a wide range of prey, from worms to rabbits, so when the female brought in a rat and carefully tore it into pieces for the chicks, it was a real treat for her young family. And they needed it. Hatchlings grow to 10 times their hatching weight when they are adults. MALE BUZZARD Whilst the female took on most of the parenting duties, the male was never far away. Males can be up to 15% smaller than the females but play a major role in providing food. CHICKS GROW FAST My cameras continued to follow the chicks as they grew, capturing the moment their wing feathers broke through their down. In less than a month’s time these chicks will be ready to take to the skies. NEXT TIME In my next video, the buzzard chicks fluffy down gives way to darker flight feathers. And they get their first taste of a life beyond the nest! I put an old log, with moss artfully strewn on it, out as a prop in Ash Wood and this handsome buzzard was the first to pose for me. One of the famous unites which was present at Frisian Flag 2022 at Leeuwarden, was the American 510th Fighter Squadron. The 510th Fighter Squadron (510FS) is part of the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano Air Base, Italy. It is a combat-ready F-16CM Fighting Falcon squadron prepared to deploy and fly combat sorties as tasked by NATO and US combatant commanders. The unit came to Leeuwarden with twelve fighters. The 510FS fighters are recognizable by their purple tail bands. The nickname of the unit is “Buzzards” which is also mentioned in the tail band. The 510FS was reactivated at Aviano Air Base, Italy on July 1, 1994, as the 510th Fighter Squadron. The squadron was equipped with General Dynamics F-16C Fighting Falcon, which were made available from the 512th Fighter Squadron at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, which was inactivating as the 86th Fighter Wing became an airlift unit. The 510FS was during Operation Deliberate Force was the first F-16 Block 40 squadron to drop a laser-guided bomb during the NATO intervention in Bosnia in 1995. the unit also made the first combat use of night vision goggles in an F-16 during Operation Deliberate Guard, a follow up of the operation. It was also one of the first F-16 units to become airborne forward air controllers. All in all the unit has a famous reputation in the European scenery since they were founded. (WARNING: viewers may find the following footage distressing) A gamekeeper in Nottinghamshire received a suspended jail sentence and £1000 fine on 28 January 2022 after a remote camera installed by the RSPB caught him brutally killing two buzzards in a trap. The shocking footage, recorded in January 2021, shows the man entering a large crow cage trap, containing a buzzard, and beating the bird to death. He returns the next day and kills a second buzzard in the same way. All wild birds are protected by law under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1989. After an investigation by Nottinghamshire Police, John Orrey (63) pleaded guilty to all charges. These traps can be used legally to control crows under license, but they are also being used on some gamebird shoots to illegally kill birds of prey. The RSPB is urging for better regulation of the shooting industry and of these traps. The trap was initially reported to the RSPB by a member of the public. If you find a trap like this with a buzzard inside, do not release it or interfere with the trap but email the RSPB asap on: crime🤍rspb.org.uk. Take photos if possible. Thank you.
