Learn about the life and art of Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, who explored disability, relationships and Mexican culture in her work. In 1925, Frida Kahlo was on her way home from school in Mexico City when the bus she was riding collided with a streetcar. She suffered near-fatal injuries and her disability became a major theme in her paintings. Over the course of her life, she would establish herself as the creator and muse behind extraordinary pieces of art. Iseult Gillespie dives into the life and work of Frida Kahlo. She deviated from the traditional portrayal of female beauty in art, and instead chose to paint raw and honest experiences. A near fatal bus accident at 18 left Frida crippled and in chronic pain her whole life, but she managed to make a virtue out of adversity, and astonishing original art out of her pain. She was a Mexican, female artist who was disabled, in a male-dominated environment in post-revolutionary Mexico. A feminist icon who broke all social conventions, and produced some of the most haunting and visionary images of the 20th century. James Payne explains 'The Two Fridas', her greatest painting, created during a period of deep instability fro Frida Kahlo. Her work explores issues that affected herself with honesty and integrity, which is why her paintings are held in such high regard. She was born in Coyoacan, Mexico City in 1907. Frida Kahlo contracted polio when a toddler and was involved in a major traffic accident when in her teens. Both events had a profound effect on her life and work . Her paintings often explore the consequences of these events. Frida married the artist Diego Rivera, twice, and had a turbulent relationship with him. The video explores her whole life and the paintings that she produced. Her paintings have a distinctive one-of-a-kind style. Her unibrow has become iconic. If you’ve seen her once, you’ll never confuse her with anyone else. Frida Kahlo was an extremely strong woman whose brilliant works of art were inspired by her own life-long challenges and suffering. It seems like there was a veil of mystery around Frida ever since she was born. Even though her birth year was 1907, she changed it to 1910. And, she didn’t do it to be 3 years younger, but to have a connection to the Mexican Revolution that started in 1910 and lasted up until 1920. Music by Epidemic Sound 🤍 SUMMARY: - As a girl, she never had good health. At the age of 6, she was diagnosed with poliomyelitis. As a result of this infectious disease, Frida walked with a limp her entire life, and her legs were disproportionate – the right one was a little thinner than the left one. - It may have been the health problems that inspired Frida to become a doctor. She entered the best high school in Mexico called La Prepatoria in Mexico City. - At the age of 18, the future artist got into a terrible accident: she was traveling by bus, and a streetcar crashed into it. She broke her collarbone, two ribs, and her leg, crushed her foot and her shoulder was dislocated. - But, a strong spirit like Frida couldn’t be crushed. She was unconscious for several weeks, and when she woke up, she immediately asked her father to buy her art supplies. - Frida herself said: “There were 2 accidents in my life: one when a bus hit a tram, and the second was Diego.” She met Diego Rivera several years after the accident. - Diego was never a good husband. 2 of his previous marriages ended because he cheated. His third marriage was not a happy exception. - Frida became pregnant several times but all of her pregnancies ended with miscarriages because of that same unfortunate accident. Even after doctors recommended bed rest, Frida still couldn’t give birth to a healthy child, and she sunk into depression. - In 1939, after a painful divorce with her husband, Frida Kahlo created her iconic self-portrait “The Two Fridas”. It shows the two different sides of her character, connected by a vein and holding hands. - The artist created a total of 55 self-portraits, most of them were of herself surrounded by animals. She loved animals and had dogs, monkeys, parrots, and pigeons as pets. - In 1953, her leg had to be amputated because of gangrene. The same year, she had a personal exhibition in Mexico which she attended on her bed. - She felt that she would die soon, so she wrote in her diary, “I hope the exit is joyful. And I hope never to return.” Frida Kahlo finished her last work 8 days before her death. SUMMARY: - As a girl, she never had good health. And I hope never to return.” Frida Kahlo finished her last work 8 days before her death. follow me : Facebook 🤍 Instagram 🤍 #fridakahlo

Frida movie clips: 🤍 BUY THE MOVIE: 🤍 Don't miss the HOTTEST NEW TRAILERS: 🤍 CLIP DESCRIPTION: Alex (Diego Luna) and Frida (Salma Hayek) are riding a bus when it is struck by a street trolley. FILM DESCRIPTION: After being attached to a number of actors, directors, and producers, this long-gestating biography of one of Mexico's most prominent, iconoclastic painters reaches the screen under the guiding hand of producer/star Salma Hayek. Hayek ages some 30 years onscreen as she charts Frida Kahlo's life from feisty schoolgirl to Diego Rivera protégée to world-renowned artist in her own right. Frida details Kahlo's affluent upbringing in Mexico City, and her nurturing relationship with her traditional mother (Patricia Reyes Spindola) and philosophical father (Roger Rees). Having already suffered the crippling effects of polio, Kahlo sustains further injuries when a city bus accident nearly ends her life. But in her bed-ridden state, the young artist produces dozens upon dozens of pieces; when she recovers, she presents them to the legendary and legendarily temperamental Rivera (Alfred Molina), who takes her under his wing as an artist, a political revolutionary, and, inevitably, a lover. But their relationship is fraught with trouble, as the philandering Rivera traverses the globe painting murals, and Kahlo languishes in obscurity, longing to make her mark on her own. Frida was directed by Julie Taymor, whose Broadway production of The Lion King won her international acclaim. Her vibrant colours, floral hair-dos and striking jewellery have made Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's style as famous as her paintings. A new exhibition at the Galliera fashion museum in Paris is exploring the artist's identity through some of the objects stored at her famous "Casa Azul" in Mexico City. Clothes, makeup and personal correspondence give us an insight into a woman who was ahead of her time.  Also on the programme, we visit an exhibition that explores the art of skateboarding. Plus, we speak to the new director of France's prestigious Avignon theatre festival.
