A minor far-right radical party in Germany called the 'Dritte Weg', or 'Third Path' is trying to boost its draw with marches evoking the country's Nazi past and openly aligns itself with National Socialism, unapologetically pushing its “Germans only” platform. The group is running candidates for the European parliamentary elections. In the town of Plauen the extremist group has found followers, amidst calls that they should be banned. What resemblance do today’s ethnonationalistic ideologies bear to those which surged during the rise of the Nazis in the Weimar-era? Quite a lot, this documentary shows. Germany’s far-right neo-nazi scene is now bigger than at any time since National Socialism. History may not repeat itself, but one can still learn from it. The years of the Weimar Republic were scarred by post-war trauma, political extremism, street fighting, hyper-inflation and widespread poverty. But they also saw economic boom, the establishment of a liberal democratic order and a parliamentary party system. Nobody could really imagine that the Nazis would brush aside the achievements of this young democracy just a few years later. But there were signs, warnings even that all was not well. So how does that resonate today? How do today’s right-wing populist movements and parties achieve their political aims? Which slogans, images and stereotypes played a role then, and which ones are playing a role now? The film also looks beyond Germany’s borders. How has Europe changed in the last few years and how have far-right movements been able to gain such influence? In the interwar period, democracies across the continent collapsed one after the other like a house of cards. What about today? Riding on the coat-tails of the political party the Alternative for Germany (AfD) the far-right has become a factor in both national and state parliaments, united by nationalist and often racist ideologies directly linked to those of the 1930s. At that time, global economic crisis and mass unemployment drove people straight into the fascists’ arms. So what will happen if crisis strikes now? Are our democracies and their achievements today any more stable than they were in the years before the Second World War? DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Music festivals, like most cultural events, were badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, impacting both the smallest of DIY festivals to behemoths like Glastonbury. And this was no different for the neo-Nazi music scene. Rechtsrock is a German term for music that acts as a vehicle for far-right ideology. A key part of this scene are music festivals that act as key networking hubs for neo-Nazi groups across Europe. Festivals in Ukraine, Italy and Greece feature bands from across the Continent, and there’s a strong scene in Germany, which is home to some of the largest neo-Nazi music festivals in recent years. One of those festivals, held in the German state of Thuringia, drew in an estimated 5,000 neo-Nazis. It was organised by the Turonen, a violent neo-Nazi gang who were recently targetted in a raid by police where large amounts of cash, weapons and crystal meth were found. These festivals can make organisers hundreds of thousands of euros, which are then pumped back into the neo-Nazi underground scene. From Athens to Milan to Kiev and beyond, far-right music is a vital cultural weapon for right-wing extremists. And as the far-right music scene looks to make its return after a covid-induced hiatus - all eyes are on the authorities to find ways of dealing with this dark and twisted subculture. Putin has long claimed that he is “denazifying” Ukraine, but these claims are hypocritical. In the early 00s, a wave of revolutions swept across countries in the former Soviet Union, calling for democratic reform and changing of political leadership. Fearing a similar uprising could start in Russia, Putin’s Kremlin clandestinely fostered relationships with far-right groups and ultra-nationalists in a policy that has been dubbed “managed nationalism”. These groups proved vital in turning Russia into the authoritarian regime that we see today. However, these relationships also proved useful in Russia exerting its power abroad, and have cultivated groups that will now fight abroad, and train foreign white supremacists – all with deadly consequences. Neo-Nazis Let A Journalist In Their Group — Here's What He Saw

Journalist Vegas Tenold, who embedded himself into different Neo-Nazi groups, explains some key points in the alt-right movement, including their participation in online forums and social media such as 4chan and Twitter. Tenold claims the alt-right movement is smaller than we think and that most of this movement's action lives online. Following is a transcript of the video. [Crowd] Replace us. You will not replace us. You will not replace us. Vegas Tenold: My first encounter was with the National Socialist Movement, which is the largest Neo-Nazi group in America. This journalist embedded himself with White Nationalist groups in America. Vegas Tenold: After that, I started traveling with some various Klan groups, and then I met Matthew Heimbach, who became the main character of my book. Matthew Heimbach leads the political party Traditionalist Worker Party. Matthew Heimbach: Our movement is about securing the existence of our people, and a future for white children. All of us are engaged in this struggle. And much like a military, there is positions for everyone. Vegas Tenold: Many other people, they come from poor, rural, and predominantly white parts of America, Appalachia. And they look around and they see that their neighbors and their friends are suffering under opioid addiction, that they have no jobs, and no prospects. And they kind of extrapolate from that then that must be what it's like for white people all over. They don't have the ability to kind of lift their gaze a little bit, because if they did, I think they'd see that white people on the whole, especially white men, who this movement is mostly consisting of, have it pretty good. The gatherings are a lot smaller, and you know, that's the inherent problem in the far right, sort of alt-right. It's a movement, which in large part, exists online with anonymous Twitter avatars. "Honestly, sometimes I can't believe how dumb our movement can be..We have to get serious about things if we want to move forward. This anonymous, online b- can't go on." - Matthew Heimbach, leader of Traditionalist Workers Party Vegas Tenold: With the Internet, with social media, it becomes that much easier to have your opinions reinforced. And once you try to translate that into real world action, it becomes difficult. I was at Charlottesville where they were, I would say around 400 people, which is by far the largest gathering I'd ever been to. And I'd been to dozens of these things. Yes, there has been a mobilizing effect, and I think people are emboldened but even so, they're still struggling on how to translate this into an actionable, physical movement. The current crop of politicians aren't doing any favors. I think they're feeding into this as well. So it becomes this pretty toxic place where it's easy for this kind of rhetoric to grow even more.  Donald Trump: You know there's another side. There was a group on this side, you can call them the left, you've just called them the left, that came violently attacking the other group. Vegas Tenold: You know there was a rally in Boston after Charlottesville, where I think five or six Nationalists came out, and a few thousand counter-protestors came out. Counter protesters at the Boston Free Speech Rally.  Vegas Tenold: There are rays of light in this thing. Just recently, a guy, a former Hammerskin, which is the most extreme part of the Skinhead movement, texted me and said he left the movement. And that he might want to help others leave, too. So as awful and abhorrent as their ideology and politics is, some of them can change. Some of them can turn and come back to us.

That’s not my job to judge. My job is to be that positive person in someone’s life,” Whittier said. As a deadly pandemic engulfed the globe, Germany’s far right saw an opportunity. It used panic, isolation, and people’s need for answers as a chance to grow its hateful brand. Everyday people are marching side-by-side with fascists, and somehow far-right extremism is a major issue in Germany once again. In this episode of Decade of Hate, host Tim Hume looks at some of the country’s key conspiracy theorists, and what makes some of them so dangerous. In this intersection between COVID-deniers and neo-Nazis, we investigate why Germany is now a hot spot for people rejecting science and authority, and explain why that is seriously bad news. In the past decade, Greece elected neo-Nazis to parliament. This really wasn’t a great look for the birthplace of democracy, and pretty quickly the Greek people soured towards the street-gang-turned-political-party Golden Dawn. But not before its members had unleashed a wave of terror and brutal violence on the streets. In this episode of Decade of Hate, host Tim Hume looks at how one murder triggered the downfall of Greece’s racist and openly neo-Nazi political party, and landed most of its leaders in jail. And he questions whether the party’s notorious runaway Nazi will ever be found.
