Ubuntu Touch on the Pinephone - is this the best Linux mobile interface?

The first 1000 people to use the link will get a free trial of Skillshare Premium Membership: 🤍 I already covered Phosh, the mobile port of GNOME, and Plasma Mobile, both running on the pinephone. Now it's time to take a look at the other main alternative for mobile Linux interfaces, the one that has been around for a while now: Ubuntu Touch, or Lomiri. Let's take a look at how well it runs Become a channel member to get access to a weekly patroncast and vote on the next topics I'll cover: 🤍 Support the channel on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 The Linux Experiment merch: get your goodies there! 🤍 This shell is based on gestures starting from the screen edges. A short swipe from left to right will bring a launcher with the default applications pinned to it, and your current open applications as well, appearing on top of the pinned shortcuts. A longer swipe from the left edge will bring the whole list of applications. If you swipe from the right towards the left in a short motion, you'll switch to the next open app. If you make a long swipe from the right edge, then you'll get to a multitasking view, with apps displayed in a 3D layout. You can swipe an app's card up to close it, or tap an app to resume it. Finally, a swipe from the top edge of the screen will bring the notifications, and the quick settings, which don't display as on most other operating systems: they're in a straight line, that you can scroll from left to right, and tap each icon to get to a quick few shortcuts, like enabling or disabling a specific feature, or dive deeper into the settings. ## The Applications Out of the box, you get a nice calculator that handles rotation beautifully to display more options, and lets you swipe from the bottom in portrait to still get access to these options. The default calendar app looks good, with an Agenda view that shows your various events in order, a day, week, month, and year view. I won't dwell on the camera app, as support for the pinephone camera is still in its infancy, it's rare that it even displays an image. The Clock application lets you add various clocks from all around the world, start a timer, or use a stopwatch. Swiping from the bottom in the "clock" tab lets you create alarms, although I would have preferred alarms to be a full tab in the app instead of hiding that behind a swipe. The contacts app does what you'd expect, list your contacts and allow to set some as favorites and you can swipe from the bottom to create a new one. The file manager looks good, although it's a bit slow to start, and lets you create files, and change how the directories look. The messaging app works as you'd expect, letting you type messages and send them to your contacts. You can also swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to start a new message. The web browser is alright, if a bit slow to start. It lets you pick your search engine and homepage, and display web pages in desktop mode, but there are no sync capabilities for history, bookmarks, or passwords, so it's not going to be fantastic to use. There is also a terminal app that looks really good and has quick aliases in the bottom left corner. The Notes app is also pretty competent, letting you swipe up from the bottom to create a new note, and syncs with evernote. This leaves us with the phone dialer, letting you pick a contact, or just type the number you want to call, and the weather app, which is really black and white and pretty spartan, and it reminds me of a windows phone app. ## The Settings The settings page uses a sensible icon grid. Ubuntu Touch is pretty barebones in that regard: in terms of customization, you can change the wallpaper, the ringtone for calls and messages, and that's about it. A few apps let you switch to a dark mode in the settings, and some offer to respect a "system preference", but that's not something I could find in the settings. ## The AppStore The OpenStore serves as the App Store for Ubuntu Touch. It's not a package manager like you could find on other Mobile Linux alternatives: no way to download a desktop program here, at least not graphically. You'll get apps that were made specifically for ubuntu touch, and there are around 400 of these in total. You can also get a few Matrix clients, and a nice email client called Dekko 2, among other applications. Updates are handled in the system settings, with over the air updates for the system itself, and for the apps, grouped at the same place.

The Apps of Plasma Mobile on my Pinephone Pro

I'm reviewing all of the apps of Manjaro's Plasma Mobile distribution! While Plasma Mobile when compared to Phosh is much more feature rich, it also tends to feel more buggy. Phosh is mostly a from-scratch reimplementation of Gnome 3 in a mobile phone factor meaning the maturity can't compare. Its nice that Plasma Mobile leverages the KDE technologies such as kwin for the compositor and maliit for the onscreen keyboard. Even if you do not like the interface, it is very configurable in standard KDE fashion. The apps included with Majaro are: Angelfish, Calculator, Calindori, Clip, Click, Discover, Elisa, Index, KDE Connect, Koko, Megapixels, Nota, Okular, Phone, Phonebook, Recorder, Settings, Spacebar, Terminal and Weather. Most of the apps have a polished UI. There are bugs, but you can tell how much Linux on mobile has come along. Having said that, it just isn't stable enough for normal users to start really using it as a daily driver. 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 #plasmamobile #pinephone #pinephonepro #kde #linux #mobile #phosh

Pine64 made the hardware but none of the software for the device. However, there is a variety of software available that is created by the open-source software community. In this video, I use the terminal to update the packages (pieces of software) on the device. I then showcase some of the new changes in the software since the last release from Manjaro, the distribution I am using. Do note that they are not the ones making the software, but rather the ones pushing the new versions out to those using their distribution of Linux for ARM devices. = References = 🤍 🤍 🤍 = Music Credits = EspiDev - Lovefall (Licensed under CC BY 3.0) EspiDev - Calibre (Licensed under CC BY 3.0) EspiDev - Dreamy (Licensed under CC BY 3.0) Video title: This feels AWESOME! - Manjaro Beta 12 with Plasma Mobile 5.25 First Impressions Production date; July 11th, 2022 Release date: July 12th, 2022. Get your Linux desktop or laptop here: 🤍 The PinePhone PRO was just announced! I own a regular PinePhone, and while it's a great device to try out, and develop for mobile versions of Linux, I always felt the hardware couldn't really carry that phone into a daily driver state for me. It seems like The Pine 64 have decided to offer a more premium device this time around, so let's see what it will look like! #PinePhone #PinePhonePro #LinuxPhone 👏 SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: Get access to an exclusive weekly podcast, vote on the next topics I cover, and get your name in the credits: YOUTUBE: 🤍 Patreon: 🤍 Or, you can donate whatever you want: 🤍 🏆 FOLLOW ME ELSEWHERE: Join us on our new Discord server: 🤍 Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 📷 GEAR I USE: Sony Alpha A6600 Mirrorless Camera: 🤍 Sigma 56mm Fixed Prime Lens: 🤍 Logitech MX Master 3 Mouse: 🤍 Bluetooth Space Grey Mac Keyboard: 🤍 Logitech Brio 4K Webcam: 🤍 LG Curved Ultrawide Monitor: 🤍 Logitech White Speakers: 🤍 Xbox Controller: 🤍 *Amazon Links are affiliate codes and generate small commissions to support the channel* 00:00 Intro 00:52 The Device 03:40 Who is it for? 04:56 The Strategy It sports a Rockchip system on a chip, with 6 cores running at 1.5Ghz, paired with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and 128GB of internal eMMC storage. That SoC seems to be a variant of the RK 3399, fine-tuned to have as good thermals as possible, and better battery life. They also managed to enable suspend state, so your phone will still be able to receive calls and messages without using too much battery life. Compare this to the regular PinePhone, which only sported a Quad-Core Allwinner SoC running at 1.152 GHz, with up to 3GB LPDDR3 RAM, although my model only had 2 Gigs. It should be a major improvement, and have performance levels comparable to a mid range current Android smartphone. As a matter of fact, The Pine 64 says it should be about 20% slower than a PineBook PRO, which is a very capable ARM laptop. That should make our Linux mobile desktops run really well on this thing. Cameras have been vastly improved as well, with a 13MP main shooter in the back, and a 5MP front facing camera. The regular pinephone had a 5MP main camera and a 2MP front facing one, so there should be a very visible upgrade in terms of image quality. megapixels aren't everything, but you need to have a healthy amount of them to at least pretend to take a decent picture. The body of the phone seems very close to the original, to the point that the Pro supports all accessories made for the baseline pinephone, including back attachments, the keyboard and the wireless charging case. The only things that won't fit are the covers. You still get the same hardware killswitches under the case to disable the mic, Wifi and bluetooth, headphone jack and the modem. The display uses a 1440x720p resolution, the same as the original pinephone. It's an IPS display though, it's covered by Gorilla Glass 4, and has an elevated bezel to protect the screen from scratches when lying on a flat surface or falling. It does make the chassis 2mm thicker though. The back plate has also been modified to be less prone to fingerprints, which is a good thing, as the original one could quickly turn into a nightmare for neatfreaks like me. The battery is the same as the PinePhone, a Samsung J7 compatible one, at 3000mAh. This might be an issue, as the new SoC is more powerful and thus might use more power. We'll have to see if the optimizations they've worked on with the manufacturer can offset that. The PinePhone Pro is available for preorder already, at a 399$ price, and people opting to buy one should expect it to arrive in early 2022, unless component shortages intensify. Of course, this thing isn't a silver bullet for Linux phones. Software still has a ways to go to be daily driver material for me, and probably for a lot of people as well. So the PinePhone PRO is still geared towards developers, and super early enthusiasts who want a phone that can also be their Linux desktop when they need it to, but who don't rely on apps too much.

It's developed mainly by Purism, for their Librem5. It's open source, used by a lot of distros that you can flash to and SD card and use on the pinephone for example. I'm trying this out on the baseline Pinephone model, with Manjaro Phosh, but you could also try phosh on Fedora, Debian, Manjaro, postmarket OS... Obviously it's manjaro, so expect more apps than the default, and a specific icon theme, which I changed so it would look more "vanilla". It's only one of the available mobile interfaces for Linux mobile devices, you could also get Plasma mobile, Ubuntu touch, and a lot of other. I'll only talk about Phosh, not the battery life, the use of hardware, etc... as it is dependent on what you'll run it on: pinephone, Librem 5, or maybe something else in the future. ## The shell Phosh takes the concept of GNOME shell, and moves it to a mobile form factor. Basically, you've got this arrow at the bottom of the screen, which brings up the activities view, combined with the app grid. You'll see all your running apps, and the ones you can launch as well, on the same screen. It's a simple enough interface, although it might not scale all that well when people have the option to install tons of applications. There is a search feature, obviously, which only searches through applications, you won't get the full system search you can enjoy in desktop GNOME here. Up top, you get your standard indicators, with the cellular icon, which is not enabled here as I haven't moved my SIM to the pinephone, the wifi, bluetooth, time, and battery. Clicking in that black area up top displays the settings shade, with quick settings, much like on Android. You can't customize these, but you'll get the essentials: rotation, do not disturb, flashlight, and docking mode, as well as volume and brightness sliders. If you have notifications, they'll be displayed underneath these sliders. To dismiss this shade, just tap on the top of the screen again. In the activities view, you get a horizontally scrolling list of your recent apps, and a favorites bar. These favorites can be customized with a long press on the app's icon, which also display the various options for this application, just like right clicking an icon in GNOME's dock. Underneath that, you get your app list, sorted alphabetically. Now, it ships with a bunch of default applications, which manjaro supersedes with more stuff, just like on the desktop version of the distro. You have the basics: a text messenging application, a phone dialer, a contacts app, a calculator, a calendar, a clocks application, everything you'd expect to get on a phone. These apps are all responsive, which means that they are, in fact, the desktop GNOME apps, that just know how to behave when opened on a phone screen. All the features are still there, but things are moved to a hamberger menu, or to tabs, displayed on the bottom instead of being on the top of the app, as they are positioned on the desktop. Some apps have not received that mobile treatment, though. The calendar, for example, is the full desktop app, whish is displayed with very small text, and touch targets, and is barely usable. The file manager manjaro ships is called portfolio, so it's not the GNOME FIles app, Nautilus. I tried older versions of Phosh where Nautilus was included but it wasn't adapted for mobile at the time. If you need more applications than what your distribution ships, you have GNOME Software, which works fine, even though you can feel there are still some hiccups. This means that you'll get to install any desktop app on your phone as well, like GIMP, Inkscape, or Libre Office. Why would you want to do that on a phone? Well, because this shell turns into a full desktop shell once you plug the phone to a display. You then get the full GNOME experience, with the desktop shell, and all the apps you've installed spring to their full size. This video is sponsored by Skillshare

Explorer edition PinePhone Pro review with KDE Plasma Manjaro. This phone feels several times faster than the PinePhone 1. It's very fun to use and program for. If you are a software developer , privacy enthusiast, linux enthusiast get this phone. If you want a phone that just works, don't buy this phone yet. It still has a ways to go. No suspend yet, not distro hoping yet (Hard to flash internal memory) Edit: Update, I said the front camera is the same camera as the rear camera on the original pp. That turns out to be false. pine64 said that on their original promo but it was untrue.

We will experiment with my Pinephone and see what we can do with this at this early stage. We will test wifi, LTE, SSH, Copying to eMMC flash storage, sound test, load desktop apps, test desktop apps, create a development environment for C. Write a short C program. Using Phosh with PostmarketOS for this exercise. While we wait for the Mobile UI's to be finished, we're going to play and let Ubuntu Touch, Phosh, LuneOS, Plasma Mobile, Maemo Leste, Sailfish, Nemo all get a chance to get developed. This play time will not spend too much time on the UI's or focusing on their bugs but to see what we know we can do on the device so far. Although some have made a phone call, and used SMS, I have not tried that and have not researched the procedures since it is not part of the UI yet. I also have not found current instructions for the camera. I'm the Internet Privacy Guy. I'm a public interest technologist. I'm here to educate.
