Pop!_OS And The COSMIC Desktop. The Best Desktop Linux?

I'm taking a quick look at the recently released Pop!_OS 21.04 with their COSMIC desktop. COSMIC is a set of customizations that makes GNOME much more palatable. In fact, Pop!_OS COSMIC might be the best GNOME-based Linux distro. It could even be argued that Pop!_OS might be the best desktop Linux distro period. What they've done with the desktop is bring most features that GNOME packs into the Activities overview, into their own modules. By default, you have a dock, that can extend to the screen edges or not, you get a big applications launcher that opens as a window, not in full screen, and a dedicated WOrkspaces view, plus a launcher. That's the good thing: YOU decide. All these tools definitely fill parts of the same function, and so you can pick which ones you want to keep, and which ones you don't. Same goes with the applications grid: you can open it with the Applications button in the top left, or the dock icon, or set the super key to open it. It opens in a window, so it doesn't block out your whole screen, and it's got a very nice folder implementation: instead of having folders inline with the rest of the apps, each folder you create has its own tab in the bottom, so it's way easier to navigate to one, although you do lose the drag and drop reorganization of apps, or folder creation. You need to click the create folder icon to create one. You also get a launcher, which is probably the less accomplished tool implemented here .It can also search through files, recent documents, browse the filesystem, run a terminal command, perform calculations, do a web search, or even run an sh command. Gestures on PopOS are a mixed bag. First, apart from the virtual desktop switching, they're not 1:1 gestures. Second, the gestures can't be configured. There's also a very handy restore partition being created automatically, and you can update it straight from the settings. PopOS has a great system wide feature: it lets you switch from a regular window manager, with floating windows, to a tiling window manager that can be operated from the keyboard entirely. It's right there, up top in the panel. Just press SUper + Y, and all your windows automatically tile themselves in a sensible way. There, you can either the mouse to resize them, stack them on top of another to create tabs, or move them to a different position. Or use the keyboard to do the same, all shortcuts are explained right in the indicator panel. PopOS uses the PopSHOP, a graphical app based on the elementary OS appCenter, instead of GNOME Software.PopOS adds their own repos with a bunch of applications that aren't in ubuntu's repos, or are available as snap packages on Ubuntu, and they ship with flathub out of the box. PopOS also generally has more up to date internals, with more recent kernels than Ubuntu, more up to date mesa drivers, they don't limit themselves to just security updates, they do pull in the latest stable versions of a lot of the software stack. It's also the only distro I used that has a good way of switching between integrated graphics and dedicated GPus on hybrid laptops.

First Look at System76’s Rust-Based Desktop Environment | Exploring New Pop!_OS COSMIC Panel

Seriously, this makes me very excited. After a few months of development, System76 has finally released how its new Pop OS COSMIC desktop, especially the panel and applet will look like. Use GNOME 42 Theme On Older GNOME 🤍 Make Xubuntu Look Like Old Windows 95 🤍 Change Elementary Login Background 🤍 Enable Global Menu on Android Studio 🤍 Customize Ubuntu GNOME Login Screen 🤍 I've always been a big fan of desktop applets and indicators. While GNOME unify all of them into one menu in the top-right corner, System76 clearly split them into individual menu. It seems that they want to give users choices by making it customizable e.g refine position (move left or right) just like Xfce, MATE, and KDE Plasma. Something that we don't get "out of the box" in GNOME Shell. Pop!_OS 21.04 - Cosmic, or less than Stellar?

Download Safing's Portmaster for FREE and take control of your network traffic: 🤍 Today, we're going to take a look at PopOS 21.04. Or 21.06? It should release in June, so 21.04 doesn't really make sense, right? Anyway, the guys at system76 have been working at their distro for a while now, but this release is the first time that I felt they departed from baseline Ubuntu enough to warrant a dedicated video. So we're gonna take a look at the new stuff, but also at stuff that already existed previously, as it's the first time I'm really using PopOS at all, and the first contact I'll get with their GNOME redesign called Cosmic. Infinitely Galactic's Channel: 🤍 Become a channel member to get access to a weekly patroncast and vote on the next topics I'll cover: 🤍 Support the channel on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 ## Install process The first contact you get with PopOS is also the first departure from Ubuntu: they don't use the Ubiquity installer, they use the installer created by the guys at elementary OS. Actually, PopOS has been using that new installer even before elementary OS used it themselves. The installer opts for a "first run setup", which means that user account creation is handled after the install is complete. ## Cosmic Desktop First, you don't get a unified "Activities" view, instead, you have 2 buttons: one for workspaces, and one for Applications. The Workspaces view displays your open windows and your workspaces on the left. It's basically what the activities view is on GNOME, except having the workspaces on the left makes it easier to just slide your mouse down from the "workspaces" button into the list of workspaces. You'll be able to change that behavior as well, to put the workspace list on any other screen edge if you prefer. The Applications button shows the Applications grid, with all the latest GNOME goodies, like folder creation and renaming, or reordering the applications in the grid. Cosmic also adds a permanent dock on the bottom of the screen. Its default configuration is... not great. It doesn't autohide when a window is maximized, and it extends all the way to the screen edges, which doesn't really serve a purpose. You can change both of these behaviors in the settings, with plenty of other options, like the size, the position, or the ability to hide some of the default launchers. While it serves as a launcher for apps, and for task management, you can't minimize an app by clicking on its icon. The rest of the layout is standard gnome, with the date and time in the middle of the top panel, and the indicators to the right. Now, that new launcher. This is a brand new addition to PopOS 21.04 as well. It can be summoned by clicking its dock icon, or by pressing the super key, although, once again, that behavior can be changed. The launcher is a bit lackluster at the moment. It only lets you search for applications, or open windows, and do calculations if you press the "equal" symbol first. It's supposed to let you execute commands, but I couldn't get it to run Xkill, or top, or any other command I tried. The problem is that in GNOME, system wide search is handled through the activities view. Here, that search only appears in the applications view, and it doesn't search through the system either, unless you manually re-enable these search options in the settings. But enabling all these search providers doesn't do anything for the launcher, which doesn't seem to take advantage of them. Basically, PopOS has, by default, made search worse than in GNOME, which isn't fantastic, and the launcher, as of now, doesn't bring any benefit compared to the system-wide search that GNOME offers by default when pressing the super key and typing. It's a bit disappointing, especially considering that there are way better programs that do that already, like ULauncher. In general, that new Cosmic desktop layout just doesn't seem to bring much that's new, and it kinda feels like it's not finished. It might be a good foundation for a more refined version of GNOME in the future, but in this current incarnation, it offers less functionality out of the box in terms of search, the dock doesn't seem completely fleshed out yet, and separating workspaces and applications doesn't really bring any advantage apart from being more legible to complete newcomers to Linux and GNOME. So I hope to see Cosmic mature in the future.

PopOS is making a NEW DESKTOP, and it's GREAT for Linux

Get your Linux desktop or laptop here: 🤍 Earlier this month, a POPOS desktop engineer casually dropped on a reddit conversation that PopOS would prefer to develop their own desktop, using RUST, so let's see why that's amazing! 👏 SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: Get access to an exclusive weekly podcast, vote on the next topics I cover, and get your name in the credits: YOUTUBE: 🤍 Patreon: 🤍 Or, you can donate whatever you want: 🤍 🏆 FOLLOW ME ELSEWHERE: I also do a Gaming Podcast: 🤍 Join us on our new Discord server: 🤍 Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 📷 GEAR I USE: Sony Alpha A6600 Mirrorless Camera: 🤍 Sigma 56mm Fixed Prime Lens: 🤍 Logitech MX Master 3 Mouse: 🤍 Bluetooth Space Grey Mac Keyboard: 🤍 Logitech Brio 4K Webcam: 🤍 LG Curved Ultrawide Monitor: 🤍 Logitech White Speakers: 🤍 Xbox Controller: 🤍 *Amazon Links are affiliate codes and generate small commissions to support the channel* 🤍 First, it will be called "Cosmic" just like the current GNOME + Extensions configuration that PopOS ships. Second, it will be written in Rust, from scratch. Third, it will follow the FreeDesktop specification, so it will be interoperable with other desktops. They also aim for more stability, and less resource usage than GNOME, with greater configuration options. This is important, because it means that PopOs is going the same route as Unity did in the day: only write a new shell, but don't spend too much resources on re-writing everything around it, apps, window managers, settings panels, etc... What will it look like? Basically like what today's Cosmic desktop looks like: dock on the botton, top panel, launcher to open apps and search... It makes sense to not disturb user's habits and not re-make the whole experience. It will also have the auto tiling features PopOS users already enjoy. The desktop won't be here for 22.04, that's for sure, and I personally wouldn't expect it until 2023. But why create yet another desktop environment? Won't that split development efforts and hurt the Linux desktop in general? Let's get that out of the way: this is a very common misconception, but it's not how things work. You can't always make your own vision for something coexist with the vision the original project has. Sometimes, the two are incompatible. In that case, you have 2 options: you create your own vision, and start working on it, or you forget your vision, and stop working on a project whose goals you no longer share. Basically, if you don't fork, or create your project, you'd stop contributing anyway, so no one loses manpower in the end. Now, why would PopOS and System76 feel that they can't keep using GNOME? This is obviously a move to try and not be impacted as much by the GNOME planned changes. GNOME is moving in its own direction, that PopOS hasn't really liked all that much in the past, and it doesn't seem that relations are improving, as incendiary blog posts and tweets keep being fired on a regular basis from GNOME contributors and System76 employees. PopOS had already made a first move by renaming their shell "Cosmic", when they decided to ship a variety of extensions out of the box on their distro, to implement a vision closer to what they'd like their users to have. Still, it seems that these extensions aren't enough: they are in general kinda hacky, can be broken with every major release of GNOME, and have no chance of ever getting upstreamed, so they'll be a burden on System76 for however long they'd decide to keep using them. Now, my opinion about this is pretty positive. I think it's great that PopOS is developing their own desktop. I thought it was great when Ubuntu developed Unity. I think it's awesome that we have multiple desktop choices on Linux. Basically, I think that each distribution should have its own specific "thing" that makes it unique, or it doesn't really have a reason to exist. elementary OS has its own desktop environment and appcenter, Fedora has all the latest tech, Arch is the most bleeding edge distro, Gentoo is super optimized for your hardware, and a lot of other distros bring their own more minor spins on these bases, that serve a purpose.

Pop!_OS 21.04 - Cosmic desktop??

Parecido a Gnome?

Pop OS 22.04 LTS - Cosmic Desktop

Witam was na moim kanale. Tu Dragonek.
