S1 E13 - WALVIS BAY, Largest in Namibia

Walvis Bay is the largest bay in Namibia and an important hug for many millions of containers shipped to the southern part of Africa.

Walvis Bay Namibia

The name of this city is Walvis Bay. This part of the video is taken at the intersection between 11th Road and Sam Nujoma Avenue. Walvis Bay is a city in Namibia and the name of the bay on which it lies. The town has 100,000 inhabitants and covers a total area of 29 square kilometres (11 sq mi) of land. The bay is a safe haven for sea vessels because of its natural deepwater harbour, protected by the Pelican Point sand spit, being the only natural harbour of any size along the country's coast. Being rich in plankton and marine life, these waters also drew large numbers of southern right whales, attracting whalers and fishing vessels. My photographs: 🤍

Top 5 attractions in Walvis Bay, Namibia, southern Africa

What to see in Walvis Bay, Namibia - top 5 attractions in town itself. Video to watch before you visit southern Africa. #Top5 #WalvisBay #Namibia Walvis Bay - town and port: 🤍 A place of rare beauty and windswept dunes, stark landscapes and jagged coastlines - a world of untamed natural beauty - this is Walvis Bay, the main harbour of Namibia. Walvis Bay is situated on the south west coast of Africa at the edge of the Namib desert and is Namibia's principal port and growth centre. Walvis Bay's rich natural resources and strategic location provide the basis for tourism and industrial development. The existing environment of growth and prosperity has already contributed to unprecedented interest both nationally and internationally. Seen as the gateway to central and southern Africa, Walvis Bay is in the threshold of a prosperous and dynamic future. The municipal area covers 1124 km square and boasts 60 km of Atlantic coastline. On the landward side, Walvis Bay is enclosed by 23 000 square km of conservation area that includes high dunes, wetlands and Kuiseb River delta. Walvis Bay's population of 55 000 people composed of a variety of ethnic groups of different religious and cultural backgrounds, and together they lend Walvis Bay a cosmopolitan appeal. There is no feeling of being a tourist in Walvis Bay, owing to the distinct blend of different cultures. Walvis Bay, (pronounced Walfish Bay) meaning "Whale Bay" in Afrikaans, has had a chequered history. The bay has been a haven for sea vessels because of its natural deep water harbour. This explains the complicated political status of Walvis Bay down the years: 1487: The first European, the renowned Portuguese navigator Bartholomew Diaz anchored his flagship "Sao Cristovao" in Walvis Bay on the 8th of December 1487, on his expedition to find a sea route to East via the Cape of Good Hope. He named the bay Golfo de Sanata Maria da Conceicao. 1840: In the scramble for Africa, Great Britain, a premier sea faring nation at the time, annexed Walvis Bay and a small area of the surrounding territory to forestall German ambitions in the region and to ensure safe passage of British ships around the Cape. 1910: Walvis Bay, as well as the Cape Colony, became part of the newly formed Union of South Africa. However, a dispute arose with Germany over the enclave's boundaries. This was eventually settled in 1911 and Walvis Bay was allocated an area of 1124 square km. 1915: South African forces ousted the Germans and Walvis Bay was quickly integrated into the new martial law regime established in  South West Africa. South Africa was later awarded control over South West Africa by the league of Nations. 1921: Civilian rule was restored in South West Africa and Walvis Bay became an integral part of South West Africa. 1971: With independence for South West Africa imminent, South Africa transferred power over Walvis Bay back to its Cape Province. 1977: In its attempt to avoid losing control of Walvis Bay to a possibly hostile SWAPO-led government, the then South African Government reimposed direct rule and reasserted its claim to sovereignty based on the original annexation.  1978: The United Nations Security Council provided for bilateral negotiations between South Africa and a future Namibia to resolve the political status of Walvis Bay. 1990: South West Africa gained Independence. A new nation, Namibia, was born but Walvis Bay remained under South African control. 1994: Walvis Bay was formally returned to Namibia after the local business community and investors in Walvis Bay applied pressure on the South African authorities to resolve the political status of Walvis Bay. Sensationelle Aufnahmen im hautnahen Kontakt mit Robben während einer Kajaktour in der Lagune von Walvis Bay. Ein Abstecher nach Swakopmund ist wie eine Reise in die deutsche Kolonialgeschichte.

What Walvis Bay looks like, and surroundings

You will find Walvis Bay on every world map, not because it's massive, but because it is special. As the last annex of the British empire, it's history is interesting. Wedged in between the Ocean and Sandy Desert of the Namib, this is one beautiful town, with loads to do and see for visitors and locals alike. The lagoon is a nature preserve site, and all the wealthiest people in Walvis Bay live on prime propery next to the Lagoon. To the South of Walvis Bay is the Salt Processing works, where salt is extracted from sea water. The town itself is protected from the encroaching desert by multiple layers of fencing. To the East of Walvis Bay there is the Bird paradise, and further out is Dune 7. The poorer neighborhoods also feature a little in this video, and you can see the contrast in living standards between the richest and poorest inhabitants of this harbor town. The goods that are shipped through the port is further transported to Southern Africa by road and rail. #madewithkdenlive #awesomechapters #awesomenature

The town covers a total area of 29 square kilometres (11 sq mi) of land.[4] The bay is a safe haven for sea vessels because of its natural deepwater harbour, protected by the Pelican Point sand spit, being the only natural harbour of any size along the country's coast. Being rich in plankton and marine life, these waters also drew large numbers of southern right whales,[5] attracting whalers and fishing vessels. The Dutch referred to it as Walvisch Baye and the English as Whale Bay. In its eventual formal incorporation, it was named Walfish Bay, which was changed to Walvish Bay, and ultimately to Walvis Bay. It has also been referred to as Walwich Bay[6] or Walwisch Bay.[7] The Herero people of the area called it Ezorongondo.[8] A succession of colonists developed the location and resources of this strategic harbour settlement. The harbour's value in relation to the sea route around the Cape of Good Hope had caught the attention of world powers since it was discovered by the outside world in 1485. This explains the complicated political status of Walvis Bay down the years. The town is situated just north of the Tropic of Capricorn in the Kuiseb River delta and lies at the end of the TransNamib Railway to Windhoek, and on B2 road. Walvis Bay, with its large bay and sand dunes, is an important centre of tourism activity in Namibia. Attractions include the artificial Bird Island, centre of a guano collection industry, the Dune 7 sand dune, the salt works, the abundant birdlife, and a museum. Kuisebmund Stadium, home to two clubs in the Namibia Premier League, is also located in the city. The beach resort of Langstrand lies just a few kilometres north. The Walvis Bay Export Processing Zone is an important facet of the local economy.Economy and infrastructure Logistics Walvis Bay is an important logistical port for the southern African region, providing port facilities for the import and export of cargo for the rest of Namibia, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Botswana. Since the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) was established in 2000, cargo moving through the port has increased from 30,000 containers a year to 370,000 containers in 2016. As of 2017 the port was being upgraded to increase its capacity to move 1 million containers a year by 2019. Bureaucratic and logistical problems at the city's competitor port at Durban, South Africa have diverted traffic to the port at Walvis Bay. Ninety-five percent of all cargo hauled overland through Walvis Bay is carried by truck.[37] The Walvis Bay Corridor Group is gearing up to increase import/export-business opportunities in Namibia. The Namibian National Development Plan expects to complete the expansion programme of the Walvis Bay port by 2019. Because of the harbour's geographical positioning, authorities plan to gain a footprint in providing landlocked Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries with a vital logistical hub.[38] In addition to the importance of the port, development would strengthen trade corridors which consists of current road and rail networks.[38] Fishing In Walvis Bay there are different fishing companies like Hangana Seafood, Caroline Fishing, Benguella Fishing Company, Cadilu Fishing, Etosha Fisheries, Kuiseb Fishing Enterprises, Blue Ocean Products, Benguella Sea Products, Consortium Fisheries, Talanam Manufacturing

Armed robbers snatch N$1.5 million cash at Walvis Bay

By: Hendrina Kanyolo A cash-in-transit vehicle belonging to the Namibia Protection Services (NPS) was robbed of N$1.5 million by armed men at Walvis Bay on Saturday morning. According to the Erongo police commander for community affairs, Inspector Ileni Shapumba, the suspects made use of a government number plate on their gateway vehicle. Shapumba stated that cash was collected from Woermann Brock shops in Kuisebmond and Narraville, U-Save Kuisebmond, Metro cash and carry and Motovac. The robbery took place between 08:30 to 08:40 in the morning at the Motovac company at Walvis Bay. According to the police, three security guards were busy loading the cash boxes into the vehicle, when the robbers attacked them. It is alleged that they took about seven boxes loaded with cash, collected from several shops in the vicinity. It is suspected that the robbers used a White Corolla Quest with government licence plates as a getaway vehicle. “We assess the situation, members (police) are on the ground, gathering all pieces of information and we are following the matter with confidence. We continued to urge members of the public - this particular case happened in public- the planning and pre-planning took place in public-maybe there is someone with information to assist the police in successfully arresting those involved in the particular criminal activity. Shapumba added that they will be hosting a meeting with security companies to provide training so that they know how to handle such situations. "If there is a need for us to provide escorts, where people are transporting a really huge amount of money, we should be contacted so that we can do that," said Shapumba. According to the police, robbers got away with a 1×9 mm Pistol Makarov, an I-tell cellphone, Motorola cellphone and a hand radio. Shapumba is seeking assistance from the community members to assist in reporting any suspicious vehicles in town, so that the thieves can be brought to book.
