The World Islands in Dubai are a construction and engineering wonder, they're also mostly deserted islands. These man-made islands, which cost an estimated $14 Billion to build, were constructed via a method called "land reclamation". In 2003, Sheikh Mohammed unveiled The World Islands. This mega project was planned to consist of nearly 300 small, artificial islands constructed to resemble a map of the world. Located in the waters of the Persian Gulf, just 4 kilometers off the coast of Dubai, the construction of the World Islands began in September 2003. The islands were to be composed of nearly 321 million cubic meters of sand dredged from Dubai's shallow coastal waters and 31 million metric tons of rock, all of which would be surrounded by an oval-shaped breakwater island. A vast majority of the islands were purchased by large commercial groups. However, fast forward to today, and most of The World Islands are still empty and there is hardly any development. In fact, there are only 2 or 3 islands that are completely functional and available for commercial use. 17 years and $14 billion later, the 300 artificial islands now sit vacant, most of them bare and completely undeveloped. So what happened with this extraordinary project? Did it fail? Or is there still hope? Today, although the status of the World islands remains uncertain, development work has started on a few islands. The most noticeable project currently being built in The World Islands is the $5 billion dollar Heart of Europe project being developed by the Kleindienst Group. This ambitious project aims to develop European-themed luxury tourist resort that will have many attractions including a Raining Street, where it will rain artificially whenever the temperature rises above 27 degrees Celsius, an outdoor snow plaza, and the first underwater hotel. The Phase One opening of the Heart of Europe will consist of Sweden Beach Palaces, Germany Villas, heart-shaped Honeymoon Island, Portofino Hotel and the Cote d'Azur Resort. In today's video, we'll talk about how Dubai's artificial islands were constructed. So, how did the islands come to be? The process of dredging sand from the Persian and Arabian Gulf floors is known as land reclamation. The sand was then sprayed and "vibro-compacted" into shape, using GPS technology for precision, and protected by millions of tons of rock. The United Arab Emirates' most populous city and emirate is Dubai. The islands were built to create more coastal real estate because the city is a popular destination for wealthy tourists. Work on the Palm Islands began. Divers surveyed the seabed, and workers used blasted mountain rock to build a crescent-shaped breakwater. At its deepest point, the Crescent of Palm Jumeirah stands a little more than 13 feet above low tide sea level and sits in 34 feet of water. The lowest layer of the breakwater is sand, which is covered by an erosion-resistant, water-permeable geo-textile. The sand is covered by one-ton rocks, and the structure is capped by two layers of large rocks weighing up to six tons each. A floating crane has placed a "toe" inside the Crescent. The breakwater also has two 328-foot openings on each side to keep the 16 narrow, deep channels from becoming stagnant. Every 13 days, these gaps allow water to circulate completely. The Palm Islands are made of sand that has been dredged from the seabed and transported from the Persian Gulf. The Palm Jumeirah is made up of 3.2 billion cubic feet of ocean sand that has been vibro-compressed into place. Vibro-compaction involves saturating loose sand with water jets and vibrating it with probes to increase its density. When water is added to desert sand, it tends to liquefy, so it couldn't be used for this project. Designers and contractors used Differential Global Positioning Systems (DGPS) to plot the palms and ensure the sand placement was within 0.39 of an inch to get the complex shape just right. During the construction of the island, workers lived on the "fronds" and in anchored cruise ships. According to some sources, the islands are sinking into the sea, but Nakheel denies this. Environmentalists have also claimed that the islands' construction has harmed the marine environment in the area. They objected to the project, claiming that rocks and sand buried oyster beds and coral reefs, and that changing currents eroded the mainland shore. The Palm Jumeirah is currently crammed with villas, hotels, and attractions. According to BusinessInsider, hotels are built on the palm's "trunk," while homes are built on the "fronds." A six-lane sub-sea tunnel connects Palm Jumeirah to the mainland to facilitate tourism and make life easier for residents. Before rereleasing the water, workers used a dam to drain the area and excavate the seabed. The only public transportation option on the island is a monorail that runs the length of the palm. It opened in 2009. On the Palm Jumeirah, new resorts are still opening, and developers are financing and building luxury apartments. In 2021, an observation deck on the 52nd floor of The Palm Tower opened, giving visitors a bird's-eye view of the entire island. Despite the failures of other islands off the coast of Dubai, Palm Jumeirah has become a popular destination for those seeking luxury and leisure. Let's take a closer look at the Palm Jumeirah and Palm Jebel Ali islands. Palm Jumeirah is the most well-known of the bunch, with a trunk and 17 fronds shaped like a palm tree and surrounded by an almost 7-mile-long crescent-shaped island that is home to Atlantis, The Palm (just one of many luxury hotels and resorts that dot the archipelago). Nakheel Properties initiated the project in 2001, and it resulted in the addition of 40 miles of much-needed beaches. The Failure of Dubai's $10 Billion Artificial Islands

Dubai's Artificial Islands are one of the largest development projects in history, and were a key part of the City's history. After being announced back in 2002, these projects were intended to completed in 2010. But all of this changed after the 2008 financial crisis, with only one of the islands being fully completed. Both The Palm Jebel and The World were permanently put on hold as a result of the slowing real estate market. Twenty years later, and these projects still sit completely abandoned, with reports stating that The World Islands have began sinking back into the Persian Gulf. But all of this changed just recently, with the developer, Nakheel Properties announcing a $5 Billion Plan to save these islands. Therefore, why are they redeveloping this massive real estate project, and will these massive real estate projects ever be fully completed? Visiting The World Islands for a tour around Dubai's iconic development made a great day trip. Located only about a 20 minute boat ride from Dubai, we've always been curious to visit the World Islands. We booked a day trip to visit one of the islands called, The Island. It is formerly known as Lebanon Island, and it was the first island open to the public. The World Islands consist of about 300 artificial islands in the Arabian Sea. Our day started off by taking a short boat ride from Jumeirah One Fishing Harbour to reach The Island. Once we were there, we went to the restaurant for lunch. The food was good and the staff there were excellent. After lunch, we decided to explore The Island. On The Island, there is a pool, two beaches, a volleyball court, and plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas. They also have kayaks and stand-up paddle boards available for rent. We took out a kayak and went to a few of the other islands. The islands are only about 100 meters apart and from above, they make the shape of a world map. After kayaking, we decided to take a swim in the sea. There was music playing in the background throughout the day, and from the South Beach, we could see the Dubai skyline. The Island is a great place to go to relax. #theworldislands #worldislandsdubai Please SUBSCRIBE - New videos EVERY FRIDAY 🤍 Check out our RAS AL KHAIMAH Series to see amazing things to do in RAK: *Suwaidi Pearl Farm: 🤍 *Wadi Shawkha: 🤍 *Dhayah Fort: 🤍 *RAK 'Ghost Village': 🤍 Check out our UAE Series to find other amazing THINGS TO DO IN DUBAI: *Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) Tour: 🤍 *Hatta Honey: 🤍 *Dubai Love Lake: 🤍 *Hot Air Balloon: 🤍 *Dubai Miracle Garden: 🤍 *Global Village: 🤍 *Dubai Aquarium: 🤍 *The Palm Fountain: 🤍 *Souks of Dubai: 🤍 *Chillout Lounge: 🤍 *IMG Worlds of Adventure: 🤍 *Ski Dubai: 🤍 *Dubai Frame: 🤍 *Dubai Creek Harbour: 🤍 *Cultural Center in Dubai (SMCCU): 🤍 *SKYDIVE DUBAI: 🤍 *DUBAI Autodrome Formula 3 Experience: 🤍 *DUBAI MARINA CRUISE: 🤍 *DUBAI CREEK CRUISE: 🤍 *BURJ KHALIFA TOUR: 🤍 *HELICOPTER TOUR of Dubai: 🤍 *DUBAI DESERT SAFARI: 🤍 *Emirati Breakfast (Arabian Tea House): 🤍 Travel Vlog #29 | Dubai, United Arab Emirates | Filmed January 2021 Epidemic Sound: Make It Rain by Daxten Summer Vibe by Tomas Skyldeberg We're the Tide by Giants' Nest _ ABOUT US Hi everyone! Perhaps one of the most expensive failures of the 2008 economic crisis came from an unlikely place, just hundreds of feet off the coast of Dubai. There, sat several large masses of sand in the unique shape of palm trees and earth's continents. Several billions of dollars had been spent with enormous promise from the world's real estate companies. But, everything shut down and the nearly the entire project has been cancelled. 12 Most Dangerous Islands You NEVER Want To Visit!

Top most dangerous islands you don’t want to visit! These are the craziest and scariest islands and most dangerous islands you never want to visit! #5. “Saba” Netherlands Caribbean If you are willing to brave the rocky but short twelve minute plane ride from St. Maarten to Saba, the smallest island in the Dutch Antilles you will be graced with a view like none other, a place that looks trapped in the ancient past. Upon arrival you will find a village nestled upon a volcano that is full of vibrant atmosphere with live music, family owned restaurants featuring fresh caught cuisine and plenty of outdoor activities like scuba-diving and hiking for nature lovers. But all this comes at a cost. You might say that the locals have become such experts at having a good time because at any moment it could all be destroyed. Tourists have been known to call it ‘The Unspoiled Queen of the Caribbean’ but it could be more accurately described as ‘Hurricane Island’. Because of its location right in the Atlantic’s hurricane alley, the island has been noted for being hit by the most hurricanes of any island on Earth. Despite the constant attacks that mother nature brings down upon Saba its people still find a way to survive and rebuild time and time again. #4. “Rockall” Ireland The tiny 80 foot wide island known as Rockall which lies nearly three-hundred miles off of Scotland’s western shore has such an imposing presence it has made its way into Irish and Scottish legends as well as popular culture through music, books and television. People have long been entranced with its simple yet powerful structure with some ancient myths going as far to name it the location where the apocalypse will begin. The real life danger is in the fact that the island itself, is essentially a large granite rock sticking out of the oceanthe remnants of an extinct volcano. Because of its steep incline on all sides there is really only one place for a person to stand, the peak, which you can only get to if you are a skilled rock-climber. Even if you are it isn’t recommended that you try climbing the relatively short summit of 65 feet as the island is smack dab in the part of the ocean that boasts waves which reach upwards of 100 feet. Despite their being no natural value to the island other than its looks, Rockall was considered an extremely important strategic location by the United Kingdom who claimed the island in fear of it falling into the hands of the USSR and being used to house a missile silo. Britain’s claim to the island also has the historical distinction of being their last modern day territorial acquisition.

Dubai is on a mission: to become to top tourist destination on the planet. This Emirate has almost tripled its coast line, by building a palm-shaped city at sea. Now Dubai plans to put itself firmly on the map by recreating the world, three hundred man-made islands constructed out in the Arabian gulf. It’s the biggest reclamation project ever undertaken. The world can only be built of natural elements they demand by the shape. But it must define nature’s most destructive force: the sea. Engineers will battle against time and nature to create this man-made wonder visible from space. But will this creation of this mega structure push Dubai to the limit? Dubai is famous for its amazing architecture and the world's largest man-made islands. These islands are falling back into the ocean 20 years after they were built. This is a severe problem, and something must be done to prevent the islands from sinking back into the ocean. I explain why the islands are sinking throughout the movie, the two islands Dubai dredged with sand but abandoned, and what Nakheel Properties is trying to save the islands from sinking. #dubai #architecture #engineering

Two hours off the coast of Colombia is a small island home to over 1,200 people. As the entirety of Santa Cruz del Islote only spans the length of two soccer fields, residents live in close quarters, making the island four times as dense as the borough of Manhattan. Despite the circumstances, the community makes the most of their limited surface area, packing in a school, two shops and one restaurant. Only 150 years ago, the island was uninhabited; today, generations of families are proud to call Santa Cruz del Islote home. #Island #Home #Travel SUBSCRIBE: 🤍 This story is a part of our Planet Earth series. How Dubai's Artificial Islands Were Made

How Dubai's Artificial Islands Were Made Dubai may have the world's tallest building, the world's largest indoor theme park, and the world's first rotating skyscraper on the way, but the city's man-made archipelagos, which are all in various stages of completion: Palm Jumeirah, Deira Islands, Palm Jebel Ali, The World island, and Bluewaters Island, are the very impressive. Some of the world's largest artificial islands are being built off the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Emir of Dubai and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, is the brains behind these massive projects aimed at boosting tourism and expanding Dubai's coastline. In 2001, work on the Palm Islands began. According to BusinessInsider, hotels are built on the palm's "trunk," while homes are built on the "fronds." Long-term residents, vacationers, and real estate speculators make up the majority of buyers. Palm Jumeirah is home to around 80,000 people, with a capacity of 120,000, and is a popular tourist destination. A six-lane sub-sea tunnel connects Palm Jumeirah to the mainland to facilitate tourism and make life easier for residents. And sprawling villas fetch astronomically high prices [source: Hosseini].
