On the whole technological innovations tend to make bikes better. No-one is ever going to argue that pneumatic tyres or derailleurs haven't improved riding a bike. But there are some things that we're less sure about. On the surface, the six road bike developments listed in this video should be improvements. Why then, do we find them so downright infuriating? Are we right or should we just get on our bikes and try and enjoy them? And what gets your goat about modern bikes? 00:00 Intro 00:41 Proprietary seat-posts 02:28 Internal cabling 04:35 Aero tubing on non-aero bikes 06:29 Wheel & Tyre incompatibility 08:12 Price 11:12 Bottom bracket standards Subscribe to Cycling Weekly here: 🤍🤍youtube.com/user/CyclingWeekly1?sub_confirmation=1 More at: Cycling Weekly: 🤍🤍cyclingweekly.com Facebook: 🤍🤍facebook.com/CyclingWeekly Instagram: 🤍instagram.com/cyclingweeklymagazine Twitter: 🤍twitter.com/cyclingweekly Email: cycling🤍futurenet.com

Fortunately, there are tons of old steel frames out there- for us retro guys who will never go to the dark side.... 😎

i own a 1996 Colnago Tecnos steel frame,2002 Colnago Dream aluminium frame,2011 Lapierre Xelius carbon frame...all 3 bikes run the same Fulcrum racing 3 wheels...I have compared my average speeds between all 3 bikes and there is maybe 1-2 kmph difference between them,BUT some days the Tecnos is fastest,,go figure....Maybe a brand new bike will save another km in speed..The new stuff looks flashy and areo etc,but in the real world, all might be good for individual time trialling...all that areo goes out the window once your in a bunch of riders..the new stuff can be a pita to fix too as stated in the video...unless your a pro,its probably not worth the investment

Bicycling in general is out of touch of normal middleclass folks. For 10k I expect a gasoline motor under me. As an automotive designer a motorcycle takes much much more engineering involved. A motorcycle needs to meet more strict safety and DOT standards VS UCI and any other recreational standards.

Thanks for the lovely video. The best thing I enjoy about cycling is the joy of a great outdoor ride, even though I am having rim brakes on Bianchi Freccia Celeste, it is still working fine, as long as you keep it simple it's fine, the only upgrade I am looking for is Hydraulic disc brakes on Titanium frame which should last a lifetime!

I think everything internal is completely useless. If you have a hose that runs from shifter to derailleur it's already protected enough and guess what, it can be cleaned and swapped in like 5 minutes. As a mechanic I never ever had internal cable and housing replacements that took less than half an hour, replacing externally routed ones takes like 10 minutes and I can measure the length precisely without having to waste 30cm of housing every time.

It's even worse. For a price of eMTB you can buy a CAR! And not the smallest one. And they have like x100 more features and are VASTLY more restricted by law.

I agree 100% I can get a flippin Ducati panigale for the same price as a bike. Both represent the top end.

I love building bikes and working on them, so I "downgraded" my internally routed carbon Pf30 steed for a alu/carbon BSA, externally routed frame instead. I also love the simplicity and reliability of rim brakes! I'm 90kg+ and they've never let me down. Also reverted from tubeless down to clincher.

Just got into cycling. The prices of these bikes are a joke. You are really paying for labor and prestige at a premium. Assemble these yourself like others and save 50% - 70%.

I had my city bike custom built with a steel frame about five years ago. I haven't been paying attention to bike tech since then. Needless to say, all of the stuff you're talking about is new to me! And I wholly agree with the annoyance! I'll keep riding on my Brooks saddle on its standard seat post and not worry my head much.

A couple of things annoy me. Especially with the new 12 speed groups. There are just not a lot of cassette choices any more. 11-30 and 11-34 that's it. I do not need an 11 or a 12. Really don't need a 30 either. 34 is right out. If I lived in Colorado or something these choices would be practical, but I don't. I spend all my time mid cassette. Also the lack of color choices for frames is really annoying. We are back in the Ford Model T days where you can have any color you want as long as it is black. Find an old bike catalog from the steel frame days. Each maker offered probably 5 or 6 different colors.

When trying to counter the argument around the price of bicycles to motorbikes using the argument of pro-level level bikes to motor GP bikes just stop it. The amount of engineering required for even a CBR 600 is far greater. Plus the sheer number of components that need to be manufactured and assembled. Think about also the compliance required for laws when you consider the speeds reached on a motorcycle. So please stop justifying crazy prices because you get to ride around on a top end bike for free. Get back to the real world!!!

The move from mechanical shifting to electronic is going to make it harder to rule out electric motor "doping" in competition and local group rides.

I wish the component manufacturers had settled on 10 speed cassette standardization. Adding a sprocket every 5 to 10 years makes shifting, chains, wheels, cassette gearing, chainring gearing, and hybrid component groups an exercise in incompatibility and planned obsolescence. I don't need more gears as I already have to shift 3 to 4 times on average due to the diminishing steps in gear ratios.

Those companies that do business with Asia shall be legally killed for treason.
Firing Squad. Don't forget we're sick if their 0% value products.
Their products are worthless before, during, and after you buy. You can not resell Chinese products in a market hostile to Chinese garbage products.
Your ice maker in the 1000.00 refrigerator you got from Samsung is defective and they don't support their products. Nor does the geek squad that sold it to you.
