Frank Zappa ...and Play Yer Guitar (at UMRK) A sort of "Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar" in studio. All unreleased material 1978 - 1982 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (If you find something here that you believe shouldn’t be here, please let me know and I will remove it) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Let me say something about this compilation: while I rummaged in "UMRK rehearsals" (during assembly of the "The Birth of" series) I have found fragments of very beautiful guitar solos. So I did a job of "cut and paste". Sometimes I combined fragments taken from Take1, from Take2, and so on... I deleted the dialogues and downtime, I saved only guitar solos. I also added here and there some "Leather snippets" to solve some brutal cuts of master tapes. I am very satisfied of the job done. I hope you enjoy it. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 00:00 (1980 02 11) I Don't Wanna Get Drafted 00:53 (1978 08 xx) Easy Meat 05:52 (1980 01 28) Guitar Improvisation 06:34 (1981 09 17) Yo' Mama 09:36 (1980 01 28) I'm A Beautiful Guy 12:04 (1980 02 10) I Don't Wanna Get Drafted 18:13 (1980 01 28) Mudd Club 21:28 (1980 01 29) Sinister Footwear 22:55 (1980 01 29) Tink Walks Amok 28:44 (1980 01 29) Sinister Footwear/sleep napkins 31:30 (1981 09 17) King Kong 35:36 (1981 09 12) What's New In Baltimore 37:45 (1981 09 15) Yo' Mama 41:41 (1982 04 20) Guitar Solo 45:57 (1980 01 28) Sinister Footwear 2nd mvt + various Lather Snippets (circa 1978) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (visit Zappa official site to know and to buy the new CDs!) 🤍 (visit zappateers!) 🤍 (visit jazzappa!) 🤍

This is from my own private collection. I assembled it for my personal listening. All the material contained is unpublished. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This is a fan made video, NOT FOR PROFIT and for CULTURAL and EDUCATIONAL purposes to promote the artist (Frank Zappa). I do not own the rights to this material, I use it only for promotional-cultural use. I made the selection of songs, of fragments, cut out & sew, equalisation, stereo balance, adjustment levels, "segues" between the songs, and many other minor actions to correct any defects (as far as possible). Sometimes the songs are composed of many fragments that I have cut and assembled (eliminating many dead times and repetitions) in order to make listening enjoyable, as if they were whole songs. These song rehearsals come from the UMRK studio, recorded between 1977 and 1984, except the final solo of the song "My Guitar" recorded in studio in 1969. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 00:00:00 1980-02-xx Pick Me / Bamboozled Guitar Solo 00:02:30 1977-12-29 The Purple Lagoon / Dancing Fool / Peaches / Zoot Allures / My Guitar (solo from 1969) 00:13:38 1978-08-12 Twenty-One / Pound For A Brown 00:19:34 1978-08-12 Camarillo Brillo / Muffin Man 00:25:45 1978-08-16 Packard Goose / Pound For A Brown / Little House / Bamboozled By Love 00:49:12 1980-01-29 Thirteen / Tink Walks Amok / Sinister Napkins 01:12:05 1984 Won Ton On Alternate Version (Them Or Us Outtakes)

The band: Frank Zappa - lead guitar, conductor Ray White - rhythm guitar Steve Vai - stunt guitar Tommy Mars - keyboards Lisa Popeil - keyboards Ed Mann - percussion Scott Thunes - bass Chad Wackerman - drums "It was arranged with really nice, beautifully arpeggiated chords with odd meters in it. But there's one great thing about the way Frank writes odd meters. As far as I'm concerned, he doesn't just write odd meters for the sake of writing odd meters. If something is in an odd meter, it's the effect he wanted. So this song started out with the arpeggiated chords, and then it went to a guitar solo, and then it went back to the arpeggiated chords, with a big long melody on top of it. And the melody's really tough, but it's nice. The only thing that's in the final mix of the album is the melody. Frank just sliced the melody off and put it on the record." - Steve Vai, Guitar Player, February 1983 "Mōggio" illustration from "Universal-Lexikon der Gegenwart und Vergangenheit oder neuestes encyclopädisches Wörterbuch" by Heinrich August Pierer (1794–1850) The Black Page - The Zappa Page 🤍

Tommy: Because I have publishing on that. In my publishing, I use my real name. For my family to make them feel proud. (To Ed) Did you ever get publishing on a tune pops? Ed: No, you just caught him on a good moment. Q: Do you know about Tommy getting some credits? E: Oh sure, I was there, kind of. T: You were there. You were in the room when he came in, when we were working on it . . . E: It was in the producer's studio. T: Yeah and he . . . No no, when he told me I got credit for it was up at the house later that night. We came back up to the house later on at night . . . E: Oh that's when we were rehearsing at eh . . . T: Yeah and Frank was in the booth doing some work and suddenly he came out and said 'I really feel like I want to give you co-writing on this because you did a lot there . . . ' E: It was 'Yo Cats'. T: Yeah, and I was real surprised; I didn't expect it. That's the weird thing about Frank. Things you just never expect happen and then when you expect something, it never happens. Weird. Basic track of Frogs is from 12/11/81 #1. Sinister Footwear is from multiple dates - intro is from 11/15/81 #1, solo is from 11/17/81. Solo in Truck Driver Divorce is from Zoot Allures on 11/17/81. Baltimore is also from multiple dates - Tommy's synth solo is from 12/10/81 and the guitar solo is partly from 11/15 #2 and partly from 11/21/81. flambay notes: All tracks are sounding excellent, but each of them do need a closer look at speed correction, sometimes including pitch bend. Now all of them should be sounding like their officially released counterparts. credits: thanks to P for the CDR thanks to walk for the first seed of this compilation thanks to pbuzby for the additional source notes out of the zappateers vault a walk seed and a flambay speed corrected re-seed enjoy! 5-Aug 1981 #1, UMRK, Los Angeles, CA (with Lisa Popeil) STG, B/B- If you're looking for the highest quality part, skip to Strictly Genteel onward (the 2nd half) EDIT: I see the dislikes, folks. I will make it a point not to upload such noisy audio in the future. I'll try to take out the tracks that are as bad as some of these are. Otherwise this would be an actually enjoyable listening experience. For newer fans or casual fans who might not know, UMRK means Utility Muffin Research Kitchen. Frank's name for his basement studio. As the source for this tape is unknown, the source in the folder name has been set to "Stage". I don't have any information on who was present other than obviously Zappa and Lisa, but presumably the 1981 band or most of it. 01 Pick Me, I'm Clean [00:00] 02 Ms. Pinky [06:14] 03 Classical Medley [10:10] 04 Portuguese Lunar Landing [19:29] 05 Portuguese Lunar Landing [30:59] 06 Tinsel Town Rebellion [43:27] (very distorted) 07 Fine Girl - Easy Meat [46:20] 08 Portuguese Lunar Landing [48:20] 09 Portuguese Lunar Landing [01:02:40] 10 Shall we Take Ourselves Seriously [01:16:24] (very distorted) 11 Cruising For Burgers [01:17:34] (very distorted) UMRK Los Angeles, CA (with Lisa Popeil) 5-Aug 1981 #2 STG, A- Track List: 01 Strictly Genteel [01:29:47] 02 For The Young Sophisticate [01:32:37] 03 Mudd Club [01:37:58] 04 The Dangerous Kitchen [01:43:45] 05 The Jazz Discharge Party Hats [01:44:38] 06 Lisa's Life Story [01:49:05] 07 The Black Page [01:52:40] 08 Bobby Brown [02:05:13] 09 Ms. Pinky [02:06:37] Combined total time: 2 hours, 13 minutes and 32.04 seconds Notes on the first recording of the two: Notes Parts are distorted: track 01, track 06 (very distorted), track 10 & 11 (very distorded). Tape flip is between track 06 and track 07. More notes Most of this rehearsals (the not distorted one) are on "Portuguese Lunar Landing", a sort of short satirical rock opera that FZ performed on stage only during the Bongo Fury tour and never released on official stuff. The '81 band really didn't know this stuff. Recommended to true maniacs only! Btw, the initial main theme of the song reminds me the music of a (very) old italian jingle for a coffee brand, I bet Zappa (and the jingle too) took inspiration from some popular music, spanish or south american, I don't know. More speculations on this strange stuff are really welcome! More information (and lyrics) here: 🤍 Information Is Not Knowledge Seeded to Zappateers = 7 February 2021 Fair warning given in description of quality issues.

I realized that this version hasn't been uploaded to Youtube. So I took five minutes out of my time to assist everyone in the world and put it on Youtube. This is from the "Lumpy Money Boxset" Lyrics: Duodenum This video is being uploaded for entertainment and educational purposes only. This video is a non-profit video, as I do not make any profit or money from this video, and never will I. I do NOT own this material, as all of it derives from Frank Zappa's catalog of songs.
