Record numbers of nurses are quitting the NHS in England, figures show. More than 40,000 have walked away from the NHS in the past year - one in nine of the workforce, an analysis by a health think tank revealed. It said many of these were often highly skilled and knowledgeable nurses with years more of work left to give. The high number of leavers is nearly cancelling out the rise in new joiners that has been seen. Please subscribe HERE 🤍 #NHS #Health #BBCNews

Nursing cannot cure us, our human condition, this messy magic of being human. But here’s the thing, nursing doesn’t seek to cure. Nurses can remind us who we are, or who we are meant to be. It is nurses who can save us. Christie Watson is a writer and Professor of Medical and Health Humanities. She is Patron of the Royal College of Nursing Foundation. Her book Tiny Sunbirds Far Away won the Costa First Novel Award and along with her second novel, Where Women Are Kings, was widely translated and achieved international critical acclaim. The Language of Kindness, published in 2018, was a number one Sunday Times bestseller and Book of the Year in the Evening Standard, Guardian, New Statesman, the Sunday Times and The Times. It has been translated into 23 languages, and adapted for theatre, with a UK tour beginning in 2021. We’re entering our third year of Covid, and America’s nurses — who we celebrated as heroes during the early days of lockdown — are now leaving the bedside. The pandemic arrived with many people having great hope for reform on many fronts, including the nursing industry, but much of that optimism seems to have faded. In the Opinion Video above, nurses set the record straight about the root cause of the nursing crisis: chronic understaffing by profit-driven hospitals that predates the pandemic. “I could no longer work in critical care under the conditions I was being forced to work under with poor staffing,” explains one nurse, “and that’s when I left.” They also tear down the common misconception that there’s a shortage of nurses. In fact, there are more qualified nurses today in America than ever before. To keep patients safe and protect our health care workers, lawmakers could regulate nurse-patient ratios, which California put in place in 2004, with positive results. Similar legislation was proposed and defeated in Massachusetts several years ago (with help from a $25 million “no” campaign funded by the hospital lobby), but it is currently on the table in Illinois and Pennsylvania. These laws could save patient lives and create a more just work environment for a vulnerable generation of nurses, the ones we pledged to honor and protect at the start of the pandemic. Since I began watching medical dramas for the reacts series, I've found more and more that nurses get overlooked within media. Being a family medicine physician I can very much empathize with the situation. The dedication and contribution to healthcare from both fields is incredibly understated. Studying to become a nurse is a noble undertaking and it is a career with so many positives that I decided to make a dedicated video to all the amazing nurses out there. Instead of just me talking about nurses I decided to vlog with some of my staff I've been working with for the last few years to give you some first-hand insights into the career. Obviously, some of the nurses are a bit camera shy, which is understandable but I think they did a great job highlighting whats its like to be a nurse and in general about being a nurse. I know you guys have wanted a hospital vlog for some time now but as you can imagine vlogging in a hospital can be quite difficult with patient privacy and all. But for nurses week 2018 I had to make an exception and interview my colleagues. Also at the end of the video, you'll see many of the doctors I've worked or am still working with. So, on this kickoff for Nurses Awareness/Appreciation week I again from the bottom of my heart want to say: THANK YOU! - Doctor Mike Varshavski D.O. P.S. NBC must think America loves hospitals, because this year they’ve now bought two medical dramas from Canada! This week, I’m reacting to “Nurses”, a prime time NBC show about... yep, you guessed it: Nurses. Just because I work in a hospital doesn’t mean I truly understand the every day hustle of being a nurse though, so I brought on my friend Bianca Antisera, a traveling trauma nurse, to share her insight. There were a lot of puzzling choices in this pilot episode, from unethical blood donations, patient privacy violations, and the bizarre premise that everyone in a hospital is throwing shade all day long. Anything you think we missed? Follow Bianca 🤍BiancaAntisera: 🤍 🤍 I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. A nurse is facing backlash for posting a TikTok of her crying after a patient died. In the video, the nurse is overwhelmed with emotion as she leans against the wall and removes her mask. However, many people who have seen the video on social media are calling her "self-promoting" and the video to be "cringe-worthy." Some health care workers even believe she went too far. The nurse has now deleted her TikTok account.

The Philippines is the leading exporter of nurses to foreign countries. On average, 13,000 nurses leave the country every year. However, a month after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Philippines, a sudden deployment ban on nurses was imposed. Nurses who have spent a fortune securing jobs overseas now find themselves strong-armed to stay and serve the country. But why do so many nurses want to leave the country in the first place? As we follow the nurses working in the frontlines of the pandemic, we find out how the Philippine healthcare system leaves its nurses overworked, underpaid and unprotected. Our Council will consider important changes to our English language requirements at. These aim to provide a fair and reliable approach to ensuring nursing and midwifery professionals can communicate safely and effectively in English. Our proposals follow an eight-week consultation that received more than 34,000 responses – a record for any NMC consultation in the last decade. We consulted on two areas. First, our approach to testing. Second, whether we should consider other evidence of English language competence. Our proposals Most people who responded to our consultation agreed with our proposals overall. There was strong agreement that a high level of English language proficiency is critical for effective communication between professionals, and the safety of those they care for. Currently most people from outside the UK who apply to join our register take one of our two English language tests: IELTS and OET. Testing will remain the main focus of our English language requirements in the future and we are also proposing to make some changes. After carefully considering the consultation responses, firstly we’re proposing to: • standardise the minimum scores we accept when combining test scores, and extend the period for combining test scores from six to 12 months. Some people marginally miss the test score needed to join our register. This proposal will allow a bit more flexibility for people who need to resit a test, while maintaining the high standard of English language proficiency that the public has a right to expect. Secondly, we’re proposing to: • enable employers to provide supporting evidence of English language proficiency. We plan to accept supporting evidence where an applicant has: • trained in English in a country where English is not a majority spoken language; or • narrowly missed passing the English language test. This proposal will allow employers to provide objective information and evidence to us about someone’s use of English in a health and social care setting in the UK, including evidence from interactions with people who use services. This proposal will provide greater flexibility for people who are already contributing to health and social care in the UK without affecting the high standard of English language skills needed to deliver safe, kind and effective care. We also consulted on whether to accept post-graduate qualifications taught and examined in English as supporting evidence. While there were similar levels of support for this proposal, the consultation raised some issues for us to consider further. Given the variety of post-graduate courses, these issues are more complex to address so we are not making a recommendation on this to Council at this point. We will do more work to decide whether it would be feasible and beneficial, and will return to Council with a recommendation at a later date.
